Conor McGregor’s return to the UFC has once again brought attention to one of the sport’s longest-running unfinished stories. For years, fans expected McGregor and Michael Chandler to meet inside the Octagon. The fight was announced, promoted, and even linked to their time as rival coaches on The Ultimate Fighter. Yet it never happened. Now, with McGregor set to return against Max Holloway on July 11 in Las Vegas, Chandler has shared his latest thoughts on the situation. While the former Bellator champion says he is no longer emotionally invested in the matchup, he still believes the rivalry will eventually be settled. His comments come as he prepares for a different challenge at UFC Freedom 250, where he is scheduled to face Mauricio Ruffy on the White House card.

Michael Chandler says he is focused on Mauricio Ruffy but still expects to face Conor McGregor someday

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Chandler admitted that his feelings about a McGregor fight have changed over time. The two fighters were originally expected to meet at UFC 303 in 2024. However, McGregor withdrew after suffering an injury during training. The cancellation left Chandler without the fight he had spent months preparing for.Looking back on everything that happened, Chandler said: “Me versus Conor, whether it was The Ultimate Fighter, the lead up, the actual training camp and then the pull out of the fight and the possible rebooking, this whole thing has been an up and down soap opera for the better part of a couple of years.”
The American added that he now feels distant from the situation. “As big as it was, as entrenched as I was in it, I just feel like I’m a million miles away from it now. I don’t really have any emotions about it.”Instead, Chandler said his focus is fully on Mauricio Ruffy and the upcoming event.Even so, he made it clear that he still expects to compete against McGregor at some point. “Whether me and Conor fight in the UFC or not, Conor and I will compete against each other at some point, in some venue, somewhere, somehow, some way.”Chandler also pointed to the history between them as a reason why fans remain interested. “The storyline is already there, the animosity is already there, but also the mutual respect.” “It’s got all the makings of a blockbuster. So if it happens down the line, it happens down the line.”For now, Chandler’s attention remains on UFC Freedom 250. A win over Ruffy could move him back toward the top 10 in the lightweight division and potentially open the door to another title opportunity before retirement.Still, even with new fights ahead, the possibility of Chandler finally sharing the cage with McGregor remains a storyline that refuses to disappear.
