IND vs AFG Highlights, One-Off Test Match Day 3: India register biggest-ever victory, beat Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs

IND vs AFG, One-Off Test Match Day 3: Manav Suthar announced himself on the Test stage in style as India thrashed Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the one-off Test, recording the biggest innings victory in their history. The debutant left-arm spinner was the standout performer with match figures of 7 for 62 and a memorable first-innings haul of 6 for 33 that laid the foundation for India's dominance.

After being bowled out for 152 in reply to India's 564 for 8 declared, Afghanistan were forced to follow on but collapsed again for just 112 midway through the third day. Washington Sundar exploited the visitors' reckless approach brilliantly to return 4 for 36, while Kuldeep Yadav also enjoyed some success with figures of 3 for 30.

Suthar's debut could prove to be the most significant development for Indian cricket. With Ravichandran Ashwin already retired and Ravindra Jadeja nearing the latter stages of his Test career, the 23-year-old showcased the qualities needed to carry India's spin legacy forward. His accuracy, ability to impart heavy revolutions and knack of extracting turn and bounce from a docile track impressed throughout the match.

He became the 10th Indian bowler and seventh spinner to take a five-wicket haul on debut, underlining the magnitude of his achievement. The sparse crowd present on Monday morning witnessed the arrival of a promising new spin star.

Afghanistan's resistance was limited to veteran Rahmat Shah, who became the first batter from his country to reach 1,000 Test runs during his first-innings 60. However, a combination of inexperience and questionable shot selection ensured the visitors were no match for India's disciplined spin attack as the hosts completed another emphatic victory over the Afghans.

Onto the white-ball leg - One last thing remains to be done, and that is for Shubman Gill to step forward and receive the trophy. His teammates join him before the silverware is handed over to the debutant, Manav Suthar. The two teams will now turn their attention to the ODI series. Afghanistan are a far more experienced outfit in that format and will back themselves to put up a much stronger challenge than they managed in this Test. The first of the three ODIs will be played at Dharamshala on Saturday, June 13. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT). Until then, it is goodbye from all of us.

16:05 (IST) Jun 08

The skipper of India - Shubman Gill describes it as a complete performance from his side and says India ticked all the boxes across the three days. He is delighted with the way the team went about its business and feels there was very little to complain about. On the follow-on decision, Gill reveals that the plan was to enforce it if Afghanistan could be dismissed before lunch. Had the visitors batted beyond lunch, they would have batted a couple of sessions. Discussing the bowling strategy, Shubman says success on surfaces like these comes from constantly testing the batters in different areas and asking new questions rather than searching for magic balls. Looking ahead, Gill says the batting group is continuing to learn and gain experience. With a relatively new look side, the focus is on understanding what methods and approaches work best in different conditions.

16:01 (IST) Jun 08

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Manav Suthar has been given the award for his brilliance with the ball on debut. Suthar finished with a match haul of 7 wickets, with 6 of those coming in the first innings alone. He also played his part with the bat, scoring 28 runs. Manav says it is an unreal feeling and that he is on top of the world after a dream debut for India. He shares that playing Test cricket for India had always been his ultimate goal. Reflecting on his performance, Manav shares that batting helped him settle his nerves before it was their turn to bowl. Shares that they realised the pitch offered spin assistance, prompting him to rely on his stock balls before successfully unleashing his variations later. Suthar expresses immense pride in taking the new ball, brushes off a wasted review as a heat-of-the-moment decision, and concludes that his biggest takeaway from the match is the supreme importance of patience and consistency in maintaining disciplined lines and lengths at the Test level.

15:58 (IST) Jun 08

The captain of Afghanistan - Hashmatullah Shahidi begins by congratulating India on a comprehensive victory and admits it was a tough game for his side. Shahidi feels Afghanistan lacked discipline with the ball for large parts of the match. Shahidi also points to the reality that Afghanistan do not have a great deal of experience in Test cricket but believes the team learned a lot from the contest and will be better for the experience. Hashmatullah says that they do not get enough opportunities in the longest format and reiterates that India are one of the toughest teams in the world to face in home conditions. The Afghan skipper hopes that his side can continue to improve and learn how to perform under pressure in Test cricket. On the positives, Shahidi is delighted for Mohammad Saleem, revealing that the seamer had previously been part of the setup before an injury disrupted his progress. He describes Saleem's six-wicket haul as a fantastic comeback. He also praises Rahmat Shah for his determined effort in the first innings and Sediqullah Atal for the way he batted in the second innings.

After a long wait, it is finally time for the presentation ceremony...

15:50 (IST) Jun 08

Not quite sure what is holding things up, but we are still waiting for the presentation ceremony to get underway.

15:16 (IST) Jun 08

The right idea, wrong choices - After being asked to follow on, the tourists came out with far more positive intent against the spinners. However, showing intent is only one part of the equation and the key lies in picking the right scoring options. That was an area where Afghanistan fell short. Several batters perished while trying to take the aerial route. Sediqullah Atal's dismissal was perhaps the most disappointing of the lot. Having batted with discipline and composure for much of his innings, he threw it away on the final ball of the second session. From there, it did not take long for the hosts to wrap things up in the third session and complete a comprehensive victory.

15:12 (IST) Jun 08

Suthar led the rout - It was always going to be a challenging task for Afghanistan against the quality and variety in India's bowling attack, and so it proved. On debut, Manav Suthar emerged as the wrecker-in-chief with figures of 6 for 33, the second-best bowling figures by an Indian in the first innings of a debut Test. Rahmat Shah provided the lone resistance, showing plenty of grit and determination, but he found little support from the other end as the visitors were bundled out for 152.

15:11 (IST) Jun 08

How the hosts took charge - Afghanistan had their moments but did not threaten often enough with the ball. They were also left to rue three missed review opportunities, any of which could have altered the complexion of the innings. Mohammad Saleem was the lone bright spark for the visitors, claiming a maiden six-wicket haul in Test cricket. Having opted to bat first, India made the most of favourable conditions. Centuries from Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, coupled with contributions throughout the batting order, propelled the hosts to an imposing 564/8.

15:11 (IST) Jun 08

Let's hear from Washington Sundar - Sundar says that it felt really good to play this format after a while. Adds that the ball was coming out of his hand really well, and he just felt a bit more confident heading into Day 3. Shares that he was looking to stick to tight lines and lengths, which paid good dividends for him. Mentions that towards the end of the game, he was looking to bowl a bit wide of the stumps as the batter was having a bit more time to adjust if they bowled slightly on the shorter side. Opines that with the DRS, they are just looking to go with what their gut feeling is, and they are still learning this art.

15:05 (IST) Jun 08

India strut their stuff - Sharafuddin Ashraf will not be coming out to bat because of the quad injury, and that brings an end to the match. India have recorded their biggest victory in Test cricket in terms of runs, eclipsing their previous best - an innings-and-272-run win over the West Indies in 2018. It was a victory that was set up with the bat and emphatically backed up with the ball. For Afghanistan, there were a few individual bright spots, but the gulf in experience and execution ultimately proved too much to overcome. That said, these are the kind of matches that will prove invaluable in their development as a Test side.

Kuldeep Yadav to Mohammad Saleem, OUT! CAUGHT! India have won this one-off Test by an innings and 300 runs. Wrong 'un first up for Mohammad Saleem, around his pads, Saleem looks for the big slog but ends up getting a leading edge towards the covers region. Sai Sudharsan moves to his right from cover-point and takes it nice and easy. India took under 7 overs after Tea to take 4 wickets, and with Sharafuddin Ashraf not fit enough to bat, that's that from this Test.

IND vs AFG, One-Off Test Match Day 3: India's crushing innings and 300-run victory over Afghanistan in the one-off Test was expected, but the emergence of debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar as a genuine long-term option was the biggest takeaway for the hosts. The 23-year-old from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan finished with match figures of 7 for 62, including a stunning 6 for 33 in the first innings, as India completed their biggest-ever innings win midway through the third day.

Afghanistan, who were dismissed for 152 in the first innings, fared even worse after being asked to follow on and were shot out for 112 in just 35.5 overs. Washington Sundar starred in the second innings with 4 for 36, while Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with 3 for 30.

Suthar became only the 10th Indian bowler and seventh spinner from the country to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut. More importantly, he provided encouraging signs that India have a ready successor waiting in the wings as Ravindra Jadeja approaches the twilight of his red-ball career.

The young spinner's ability to repeatedly hit the same area, generate sharp revolutions and extract both bounce and turn from an otherwise placid surface marked him out as a bowler capable of succeeding at the highest level. While sterner challenges await, particularly on the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, Suthar's impressive initiation could allow India to gradually plan for life after Jadeja.

Afghanistan's batters, meanwhile, struggled with both skill and temperament. Poor shot selection hastened their downfall in the second innings, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah among those who perished attempting ambitious strokes. India thus eclipsed their previous best innings victory margin against Afghanistan, which came in 2018 when they won by an innings and 262 runs.
