... THE RUN CHASE ...

Looking ahead - On a wicket that has shown indifferent bounce, with Selwin Sanjay and Snehith Reddy finding considerable turn to trouble the batters, New Zealand will need to bat well to chase this total. The likes of Farhan Ahmed and Ralphie Albert will be licking their lips at the prospect of bowling on this surface, which, with the sun baking down, is expected to offer even more assistance to the spinners as the afternoon wears on. Remember, a win for England will see them through to the semis, while New Zealand are out of the race, but they will be keen to play spoilsport. A quick chat -  Snehith Reddy (2/28 from 6 overs) says that he had a word with his skipper before coming on to bowl, and in hindsight, he feels that he should have come into the attack a bit earlier. Adds that the conditions have changed with the wicket breaking down, but hopes they can chase this total. He mentions that he always looks to keep on improving and gives his best.

62 runs off the final 10 - Ben Mayes perished soon after reaching his fifty, a wicket that came at a time when England would have wanted to put their foot down. The other set batter, Caleb Falconer, hung in there, and while he couldn't quite lift the tempo, Farhan Ahmed chipped in with a handy cameo towards the end to take England past 230.

Measured middle phase - Through the middle phase, New Zealand did well to keep the scoring in check, with the run rate hovering around four an over for the most part. England seemed content not to push the pace, instead focusing on building a platform through the middle overs and, more importantly, keeping wickets in hand to allow for acceleration later on. 

A sedate start - After the toss fell their way, there wasn't a lot of movement off the deck or through the air for the Kiwi quicks, but a few balls did stay low in the opening exchanges. New Zealand weren't consistent with the ball up front, but England were unable to fully cash in, with Joe Moores repeatedly finding the fielders.

England finish with 234! A six off the final ball takes them past 230, but overall, the England innings never quite found the extra gear they were searching for. Still, it is a competitive total. New Zealand will be satisfied with their effort with the ball, which was well backed up in the field, but chasing this on a tricky surface, with a batting unit that has struggled so far, is going to be a challenge.
