Itv was a close competion in West Bengal's Mothabari assembly election as Bharatiya Janta Party's Nibaran Ghosh lost the battleground to Trinamool Comgress' Md. Najrul Islam by 10,496 votes. Najrul won 65,705 votes, while Ghosh secured 55,209 votes.
In 2026, Mothabari will see TMC's Md. Najrul Islam contest against BJP's Nibaran Ghosh and Congress's Sayem Chowdhury.
Mothabari is a general constituency in Malda district, part of the Maldaha Dakshin Lok Sabha seat. It is almost entirely rural, covering Mothabari community development block. The constituency has a significant Muslim voter base that has swung decisively in favour of TMC in recent elections.
The seat was held by Congress through the Sabina Yasmin-era dominance in this region of Malda.
In 2016, Sabina Yasmin won the seat on a Congress ticket, defeating TMC's Md. Najrul Islam. In an interesting switch, by 2021, Sabina Yasmin had joined TMC and won the seat comfortably for the party with nearly 60 per cent of the vote, defeating BJP's Shyam Chand Ghosh. For 2026, TMC has chosen Md. Najrul Islam — who lost in 2016 to Yasmin — as its candidate. Congress fields Sayem Chowdhury, while BJP's Nibaran Ghosh will look to capitalise on any fragmentation of the TMC vote. The seat is likely to remain TMC-leaning given its Muslim demographic composition and the anti-BJP consolidation seen there in 2021.
