The United States announced Monday it is bolstering precautions to prevent spread of Ebola, including screening air travellers from outbreak-hit areas and temporarily suspending visa services from the region.

The public health measures announced by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention come as the World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo an international health emergency. More than 90 deaths are suspected to have been cause by the current outbreak.

"At this time, CDC assesses the immediate risk to the general US public as low, but we will continue to evaluate the evolving situation and may adjust public health measures as additional information becomes available," the health agency said in a statement.

In addition to screening at airports, the CDC said it was implementing entry restrictions on non-US passport holders if they had traveled to Uganda, DRC or South Sudan within the past 21 days.

Three persons were detained on Monday night after a woman alleged she was molested in a moving car in Pune's Koregaon Park area, a police official said.

The woman had gone to dinner with her friends at a hotel, who left some time later, leaving her alone at the table, Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil said explaining the chain of events.

"Two persons from the adjoining table went to her and started talking. Later, they all decided to go to another hotel in a car. According to the complainant, while they were on their way to the other location, two persons molested her," Patil said.

Based on her complaint at Koregaon police station, three persons have been detained, the official added.

Further probe into the matter is underway, Patil said.

Four people died in protests in Kenya on Monday over fuel price hikes triggered by the Middle East war, while the public transport system was paralysed by demonstrators barricading roads.

Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Monday filed a petition before the Calcutta high court seeking quashing of an FIR filed against him for allegedly making inflammatory remarks during the recently-concluded West Bengal assembly poll process.

Senior advocate and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said the matter is likely to come up for hearing later this week before the bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya.

Banerjee's petition seeks the quashing of the FIR filed against him.

The West Bengal Police registered an FIR against TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee for allegedly making inflammatory statements during the recently concluded assembly elections.

The FIR was lodged based on a complaint filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar at Baguiati police station under the Bidhannagar police commissionerate in North 24 Parganas district on May 5, a day after the assembly election results were declared.

The complainant also claimed that Banerjee's inflammatory comments were linked to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he said.

After the filing of the complaint, an FIR was formally registered at the Cyber Crime police station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate on May 15.

Four people were killed and another eight wounded when a gunman opened fire near the southern Turkish city of Mersin on Monday, the DHA and IHA news agencies reported.

At least two people were killed when the assailant opened fire inside a restaurant with the two others killed elsewhere and the assailant fleeing in a car, DHA said.

The shooting struck north of Tarsus, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northeast of Mersin, prompting a widespread police manhunt to locate the shooter that also involved helicopters, it said.

DHA said the shooter was a 17-year-old armed with a shotgun.

The violence came a month after two shooting attacks by teenagers rocked Turkey.

In the first incident, 16 people were injured, while the second attack claimed 10 lives, most of them young school children.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over the plains of northwest and central India during the week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

In its special bulletin for heatwaves, the department stated that a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by two to three degrees Celsius is likely over many parts of northwest India from Monday to May 24, and by three to four degrees over Chhattisgarh till May 21.

"No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over Maharashtra and Gujarat, till May 18, followed by a gradual decrease of maximum temperatures by two-three degrees Celsius between May 19 and May 24," said the IMD.

"No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over the rest of the country till May 24," the department added.

Isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Rajasthan, and east Rajasthan are expected to witness heatwave conditions between Monday and May 24.

In west Uttar Pradesh and east Uttar Pradesh, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions can occur between Tuesday and May 24, according to the IMD.

Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and central Maharashtra are also likely to see heatwave conditions in isolated pockets on different dates between Monday and May 24.

Isolated pockets in Bihar and Telangana are expected to witness heatwave conditions on different dates between Monday and May 21, the IMD said, adding that these conditions can prevail over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from May 20 to May 24.

Gunmen in northwest Pakistan killed two police officers protecting polio vaccination workers on Monday, a security official said, on the first day of a nationwide campaign to counter rising cases.

Pakistan is one of two countries, along with Afghanistan, where polio remains endemic, but militants have killed hundreds of police officers and health workers over the past decade as part of a campaign against the Pakistani state.

"During the polio campaign in the tribal district of Bajaur District, two police officials assigned to protect vaccination teams were shot dead by motorcycle-riding militants in two separate attacks," a senior security official based in Peshawar told AFP.

The official added that "terrorists gunned down two more policemen" performing routine duties in Kohat and Dera Ismail Khan.

The attacks come as Pakistan kicked off a week-long polio vaccination campaign in 79 high-risk districts in which more than 19 million children will be administered polio drops.

Seven killed, 4 injured in truck-autorickshaw collision in Bihar's Khagaria district: Officials

A Delhi court on Monday sent Renukai Career Centre founder Shivraj Raghunath Motegaonkar to nine days' CBI custody in the NEET paper leak case.

Special CBI judge Ajay Gupta allowed nine days of custodial interrogation of the accused after the federal agency sought 10 days of custody.

The CBI said that Motegaonkar was arrested on Sunday evening in Latur and during searches, a leaked question paper of the examination held on May 3 was recovered from his personal mobile phone.

The agency alleged that he was an active member of the organised gang involved in the leakage and circulation of the NEET-UG paper, and "played a key role in circulating the question paper and answers through his coaching centre".

According to the CBI, "The question paper was leaked through him to a large number of students."

It said that he received the question paper and answers on April 23, nearly 10 days before the exam, and provided copies of the leaked question papers and answer sheets to several people as handwritten notes, which were destroyed after the examination.

The CBI said it was probing his links to the alleged kingpin, Prahlad Vithalrao Kulkarni.

Italy's foreign ministry said Monday rescuers have located the bodies of four Italian divers believed to be deep inside an underwater cave in a Maldive atoll.

The searches had resumed on Monday after being suspended following the death of a local military diver during a perilous mission to try to reach them.

Five Italian divers are believed to have died while exploring a cave at a depth of about 50 metres (160 feet) in Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, according to Italy's Foreign Ministry. The recreational diving limit in the Maldives is 30 metres (98 feet).

The body of an Italian — a diving instructor — was found earlier outside the cave.

Russia targeted eight regions of Ukraine in its latest night-time drone and missile barrage, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday, with local authorities reporting that the strikes wounded more than two dozen civilians, including three children.

Russian forces fired 524 attack drones and 22 ballistic and cruise missiles, Zelenskyy said. The city of Dnipro and the surrounding central region of Ukraine bore the brunt of the attack, officials said.

Lucknow Railway SP Rohit Mishra said that during a routine inspection of a train travelling from Chhapra via Gorakhpur to Gomti Nagar, railway staff found an abandoned box and bag inside a sleeper coach.

After being alerted, the station master informed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP). Upon examination, officials discovered a decapitated torso inside the box, while the victim’s limbs were separately packed in polythene bags and kept inside the bag. Police suspect the body is that of a woman aged between 25 and 30 years.

The remains have been sent for post-mortem. Mishra said identification has not yet been possible as the head is missing. An FIR has been registered, and three teams have been formed to investigate the case, with further action being taken in accordance with the law.

Four crew members safely ejected after two US Navy EA-18G Growler jets collided during an air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho on Sunday. The aircraft crashed while performing an aerial demonstration, prompting the cancellation of the event. Officials said the crew members were in stable condition and nobody on the ground was injured. An investigation into the collision is under way.
