The Assam government has tabled the Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026 in the state assembly, introducing major reforms related to marriage, inheritance, divorce and live-in relationships. Among the most debated provisions is compulsory registration of live-in relationships, modelled on Uttarakhand’s UCC law that previously faced legal scrutiny over privacy concerns. While the government says the framework is intended to protect women and children, critics are questioning whether the legislation risks excessive state oversight into personal relationships. The bill also proposes a ban on polygamy, mandatory marriage and divorce registration, and uniform inheritance rules across communities. Scheduled Tribes remain exempt under the proposed law. The full text of the bill is expected to be debated publicly on May 27. Shreya Chandra has more
