Vijayawada: Moments of panic unfolded inside an APSRTC bus in NTR district when dense smoke suddenly engulfed the vehicle, carrying passengers from Jaggayyapeta to Vijayawada, on Saturday. Thanks to the driver’s swift response, all passengers escaped safely.The incident occurred while the bus was en route to Vijayawada. According to preliminary information, a short circuit developed in the engine compartment, causing thick smoke to billow from the front portion of the vehicle. Within minutes, the smoke spread inside the bus, alarming passengers and creating a chaotic situation.Realising the danger, the driver acted immediately and steered the bus to the roadside before bringing it to a halt. His timely action prevented the situation from escalating into a fire-related tragedy. As smoke rapidly filled the vehicle, frightened passengers rushed to get out. While many exited through the doors, some passengers, fearing the bus might catch fire at any moment, jumped out through the windows in desperation. The sudden evacuation created tense scenes as people scrambled to save themselves.Fortunately, all passengers managed to escape without any serious injuries. Witnesses said panic gripped the bus for several minutes before everyone was safely evacuated. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and emergency preparedness in public transport services. APSRTC officials said they are investigating the cause of the short circuit and will assess the condition of the bus.
