AIIMS faculty hold workshop on AI in forensics at Bulgaria meet
Gorakhpur: Faculty members of the department of forensic medicine and toxicology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Gorakhpur represented the institute at the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) 2026 Conference held in Sofia, Bulgaria, on May 25. The team conducted scientific workshop titled 'Artificial Intelligence Assisted Age Estimation and Injury Interpretation: AI Tools Revolutionizing and Transforming Medicolegal Examination”, focusing on growing role of AI in forensic age estimation, injury interpretation, medico-legal documentation and forensic decision-making.The workshop was chaired by Nilesh Tumram, professor and head of forensic medicine and toxicology at Government Medical College, Nandurbar, Maharashtra. Manoj B Parchake, additional professor and head of the department at AIIMS Gorakhpur, served as co-chairman and presenter, while Navneet Ateriya, associate professor, also participated as presenter.More than 25 international delegates attended the session. Renowned forensic experts, including Michael Thali and Victor W Weedn, were present during the workshop. Experts from Australia, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, China, Brazil and Switzerland also participated.
The workshop included hands-on demonstrations on AI-assisted dental and skeletal age estimation, injury pattern analysis and medico-legal documentation, besides discussions on ethics, reliability and limitations of AI in forensic practice.
