Trichy: Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam's (TVK) Nagapattinam district secretary S Sugumar and his son were booked by police on Wednesday for verbal abuse and criminal intimidation. The case was registered on a complaint from a former party functionary even as a video of the incident went viral on social media platforms.
Complainant K Nagendran, 29, a resident of Melavanjur, had served as TVK secretary of east branch in Thirumarugal block in Nagapattinam. According to sources, Nagendran had raised questions about the party's expenditure with Sugumar. Subsequently, Nagendran was removed from his position in Dec last year. He approached the party's higher leadership for resolution but was advised to settle the matter directly with Sugumar.

On Jan 26, Nagendran met Sugumar to resolve the issue, but Sugumar and his son S Ronaldo allegedly abused Nagendran verbally and issued threats of serious consequences. A purported video of the incident circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism for Sugumar. On Tuesday, Nagendran lodged a complaint with police against Sugumar and Ronaldo. He submitted the relevant videos as evidence and voiced serious concerns about threats to his life.
Acting on instructions from superintendent of police K S Balla Krisshnan, Velipalayam police registered a case against Sugumar and Ronaldo under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections, and investigation is underway.
