ChatGPT comes to CarPlay with iOS 26.4, supports voice-only interaction

ChatGPT is now available on Apple CarPlay. With this, Apple CarPlay users will be able to access the AI chatbot directly from their car dashboard. According to a 9to5Mac report, the feature is currently supported on devices running iOS 26.4 or newer along with the latest version of the ChatGPT app. The update comes after Apple introduced support for “voice-based conversational apps” in CarPlay with its recent software release. This allows AI apps to work within Apple’s in-car system while following safety rules. Reports said the integration focuses on voice interaction, letting users talk to ChatGPT while driving without using the phone screen.As per the report, ChatGPT on CarPlay works only through voice. Users can input commands to the chatbot, and the responses will be delivered audibly, without any on-screen text. The app also includes a basic on-screen controls such as buttons to mute or end the conversation. Users can also view a list of recent voice interactions, but they cannot see full text responses.Additinally, users will need to open the ChatGPT app manually from the CarPlay interface, as the feature does not support a wake word. This means drivers must tap on the app to start a conversation.The rollout makes ChatGPT one of the first major AI apps to be integrated into CarPlay. Apple’s update allows such apps to function in a controlled environment focused on safety, with voice as the main way to interact.The feature is available through the latest update of the ChatGPT app on iPhone.
