Akkulam glass bridge likely to be opened before Onam
T'puram: Akkulam glass bridge is finally set to welcome the public, with the much-anticipated opening expected ahead of Onam holidays. State govt-appointed expert panel gave safety clearance for the structure, paving the way for its formal inauguration.Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS), the implementing agency, confirmed that they were awaiting an official date from state govt to open the bridge. "We intimated state govt about opening the bridge. We expect to get its approval this week. If we get it, we will open it next week," said a source at KATPS.Built at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore, the bridge features a glass floor section designed to offer a thrilling experience and panoramic view of Akkulam backwaters. However, the glass component earlier sparked public concern over safety, leading govt to delay the opening and initiate a comprehensive technical inspection. An expert team from NIT-Kozhikode conducted an in-depth evaluation of the bridge's design, construction materials and overall integrity in May this year. They concluded that the bridge was structurally sound and safe for public use.As per the expert panel's recommendations, a maximum of 25-30 people will be allowed on the bridge at a time.
KATPS plans to implement crowd control measures accordingly.Officials expect the bridge to be a major attraction during Onam season, drawing both residents and tourists to Akkulam Tourist Village. With Onam vacation fast approaching, authorities are keen to open the bridge in time to enhance tourism offerings in the capital city. The project, originally proposed as part of an initiative to boost adventure and eco-tourism in the region, faced delays due to both construction challenges and public apprehensions. With safety concerns now addressed, Akkulam glass bridge is poised to become a unique addition to Kerala's tourism landscape.
