Varuna Lake development sparks debate
Mysuru: The proposed development and beautification works at the Varuna Lake, which is spread over 173 acres, have led to a debate among the locals, activists and those who are batting for the development of this waterbody as the tourism hub.Activists urged the district administration, tourism department and Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Ltd (CNNL) not to convert the lake into a tourism hub, as it may keep away migratory birds and affect the livelihood of the local communities. However, locals point out that if there are no development works, there is the fear of buffer zone encroachment by the powerful real estate mafia in the area.Activists urged the authorities to look at the inclusive development and conservation principles, instead of destroying the lake in the name of tourism development.According to local resident Ahinda Javarappa, developmental works are being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore. "Earlier, I fought for water to the lake from Varuna canal. Now, the lake water is contaminated by the untreated water from the residential layouts in its vicinity. After a long fight, we got govt funds for the development. The latest technology will be used to treat sewage water," he said.According to Javarappa, if there is no development, there is the fear of buffer zone encroachment.
"The development will have no harm on the migratory birds or the local communities. This lake is the lifeline for the local farmers," he said, adding: "We are working to support this lake conservation."However, activists and a section of locals alleged that the proposed beautification is aimed at promoting adventure tourism in the lake, which will be fatal for the migratory birds and affect the local communities. "Already, several lakes that were beautified have stopped receiving migratory birds," they point out.Environmental activist UN Ravi Kumar said any lake conservation work should be inclusive in nature. "However, sadly, in this case, this has not been followed," he rued.
