Mangaluru: In an academic feat, a mother-daughter duo has cleared II PU exam together this year.
Netravathi VR, 41, a homemaker from Kaikamba in BC Road, Bantwal taluk, appeared as a private candidate and fulfilled her long-held dream of clearing PU. Writing the exam in the arts stream, she passed in her first attempt with 257 marks. Her daughter Hemashree R, a student of Govt PU College, B Mooda village, excelled with 562 marks in the arts stream. Hemashree emerged as a topper in her college.
Netravathi said she had attended a PU college in the science stream but could not complete the course, and got married in 2008. Last year, during a visit to her daughter's college, she expressed her desire to continue her studies and appear for the PU exam. "I registered as a private candidate. The faculty supported me, and so did my husband. I prepared alongside my daughter, who was studying the same subjects," she said.
Ravikumar, husband of Netravathi and headmaster of Nandavara Govt Primary School, said he had earlier encouraged his wife to continue her studies after marriage, but she had put it on hold. "When she expressed her interest this time, I readily supported her decision. Both my wife and daughter studied together with the support of Govt PU College teaching staff. I have now encouraged her to pursue further studies and do graduation," he said.
Yusuf Vittal, principal of Govt PU College, said Netravathi expressed her desire to continue her studies, and the teaching faculty supported her. Her daughter Hemashree is a class topper with 562 marks, he said.
