Barwani: Two men died and two were seriously injured when a car fell into a gorge in Pati police station area of Barwani district on Friday morning.
The accident occurred at Biliyapani Ghat near Golgaon village when the vehicle, going from Barwani to Semlet, went out of control and plunged nearly 300 feet into the gorge, Pati police station in-charge Ram Das Yadav said.
"On the basis of preliminary inquiry, it appeared that either the driver fell asleep at the wheel, or he lost balance and couldn't turn the vehicle, leading to the accident," Yadav said.
He said that the gorge was 600 feet deep, but the car got stuck on a tree at 300 feet.
Villagers rushed to the spot and informed the police. A police team led by SDOP Mahesh Sunaiya reached the spot and with the help of villagers, retrieved the injured and the deceased from the gorge after considerable effort.
Yadav said that 42-year-old Sakariya died on the spot, while the driver and car owner, 32-year-old Ikram, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Pati hospital. Two others, identified as Biyalal and Bhanga, sustained serious injuries and were referred to district hospital, Barwani.
He said that all four persons from Semlet village had taken a critically ill relative to Pati for treatment in the night. As the patient's condition worsened, he was referred to district hospital in Barwani. After dropping the patient at district hospital, they were returning home when the accident took place.
Police have registered a case, and after the autopsy, handed over the bodies to their families.
