Panaji: Goa experienced intense summer heat on June 1, when the state usually sees the onset of monsoon. However, the southwest monsoon is yet to arrive along the state’s coast.According to weather observations, Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6°C. However, high humidity levels pushed the heat index, or ‘feels like’ temperature, to a scorching 47.2°C, making outdoor conditions particularly uncomfortable.At Panaji, the maximum temperature was recorded at 35.6°C, which was 2.6°C above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 28.5°C, 2.8°C above normal. Relative humidity was recorded at 67%. Similarly, Mormugao recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4°C, 2.9°C above normal, while the minimum temperature was 28.8°C, 2.7°C above normal. Relative humidity was higher at 85%.The hot and humid conditions are expected to persist until monsoon showers begin affecting Goa in the coming days.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a three-day yellow alert for Goa, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50kmph across Goa from June 3 to 5, however, no large change in temperatures is expected.According to the forecast, light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are likely to occur at several places and isolated locations may also experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds.
