Chennai: A truck driver lost control of the vehicle and ploughed into people waiting at a traffic signal, killing one person and injuring two others near Maraimalai Nagar on Wednesday.
The truck carrying heavy iron centering plates was travelling at high speed from Chennai towards Trichy when the driver lost control. Police said the driver failed to notice the traffic signal and applied the brakes suddenly. As a result, the vehicle went out of control, drove into the people at the junction, and overturned.
The iron centering plates fell on the people in the impact. Vaithiyalingam, 52, a resident of Thirukazhukundram, was crushed under the plates and died on the spot. Two others suffered serious injuries and were rescued by bystanders.
Tambaram traffic investigation wing police recovered the body and sent it to Chengalpet Govt Hospital for postmortem. The truck driver,
Sakthivel, has been arrested.
