TUTICORIN: Two workers were killed and one injured while making a large-sized cracker illegally on Tuesday in Kovilpatti in the Tuticorin district.
The deceased workers were identified as workers Malathi, 25, of the Virudhunagar district, and Ayyappan, 30, of Puliyankulam. Another worker, Surya Prakash, 25, suffered serious burn injuries.
According to the police, the workers were involved in the illegal manufacturing of large-sized crackers, which are made using newspapers near the Puliangulam area bordering Sattur of the Virudhunagar district. At around 9pm, a sudden explosion was triggered while mixing the chemicals for the crackers. Killing the duo instantly and injuring the other. The place they used to mix the chemical belonged to a temple, and it's a small 10x10 foot-sized room.
Upon receiving information, fire and rescue personnel along with police, rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and sent them to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, and the injured were referred to Tuticorin Government Medical College Hospital after getting first aid from Kovilpatti GH.
A case was registered by Kovilpatti West Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the workers have the experience of making crackers and are involved in manufacturing crackers illegally.
