Panchkula: With the onset of summer, frequent fires at garbage dumps across Panchkula have become a major concern, with residents complaining of toxic smoke and foul smell.A major fire broke out in an open area in Sector 25 on Saturday, where accumulated garbage kept smouldering and reigniting, prompting deployment of multiple fire tenders. Though the fire was later controlled, lingering smoke and odour continued to affect nearby residential areas.Residents said such incidents are recurring and blamed authorities for failing to clear garbage. “The smoke is unhealthy, especially for children and elderly. This problem resurfaces every year,” said a local resident.Another fire at a garbage dump near Tau Devi Lal Stadium also required extensive firefighting over two days. Residents flagged concerns over open dumping of waste, including construction debris, in such areas.Fire officials said the exact cause remains unknown but confirmed that garbage was burning at both sites. The municipal corporation has been asked to clear waste, with JCBs deployed at some locations.The pollution control board had earlier served notice to the civic body over garbage burning, but residents said the issue persists, raising concerns over air quality and public health.
