Jabalpur: In a shocking incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, a man was booked for allegedly pronouncing instant triple talaq outside his wife’s house, while also hurling abuses and threatening to kill her, after she reported him to the police over alleged dowry harassment.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Athar Mansoori, is absconding, the police said, adding that efforts were on to locate him.
Significantly, triple talaq was rendered a criminal offence by virtue of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
According to Omti police, the complainant, 30-year-old Farzana Begum, alleged that she married Mansoori on Feb 14, 2023, as per Muslim customs.
However, within a week of their marriage, her husband allegedly started pressing her for Rs 4 lakh as dowry and subjected her to physical and mental harassment when she refused to meet the demand, she told the police.
She alleged further that he later stopped visiting their house altogether, adding that on the evening of Feb 2, this year, he came up to her house and stood outside abusing her for reporting him to the police.
He allegedly threatened to kill her if she filed further complaints before pronouncing ‘talaq’ thrice and fleeing the spot.
She also complained that on June 3, her mother-in-law brought a talaqnama (a formal, handwritten divorce deed) and handed it over to her.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered against the accused under BNS sections, Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and provisions of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
