Visavadar bypoll: AAP’s Gopal Italia wins by over 17,000 votes, calls it ‘People’s Victory’

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Italia on Sunday secured a decisive victory in the Visavadar Assembly bye-election, winning by a margin of 17,554 votes. Reacting to his win, Italia credited the people of Gujarat for the outcome.

“These elections were contested by the public… I was only a medium,” Italia said. “When the people contest the elections themselves, it is confirmed that the results would be historic.”

He added that despite the BJP’s efforts, the result reflected a growing demand for change. “The BJP did everything to win these elections… This is people’s win. The people want change in Gujarat. The people have faith in the AAP and its leadership,” he said.

Italia thanked party workers, voters, and supporters for their involvement, calling the result a sign of shifting political sentiment in the state.

UDF hails Nilambur by-poll win as step towards 2026 comeback; Left alleges communal backing

Buoyed by its decisive win in the Nilambur assembly seat, the opposition UDF in Kerala on Monday called it the first step towards returning to power after the assembly polls next year, while the ruling Left accused the Congress-led alliance of securing the victory with the support of communal votes.

The jubilant UDF leadership attributed their candidate Aryadan Shoukath's success in the forest-fringe constituency to strong teamwork and coordination among leaders and party workers.

All prominent UDF leaders, including Congress veteran and former Defence Minister A K Antony asserted that Shoukath's win was a reflection of the strong anti-incumbency wave prevailing in the state.

Antony told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram that with the UDF’s victory in Nilambur, the continuation of the Vijayan government in the state had become "merely technical".

"A change in administration has already taken place with the UDF's victory in Nilambur. The present state government is now just a caretaker government," he said.

AAP's Sanjeev Arora wins Ludhiana West Assembly by-poll by margin of 10,637 votes

AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora expressed gratitude to the public and the party leadership after his victory from the Ludhiana West assembly by-polls on Monday.
AAP's Sanjeev Arora won the Ludhiana West (Punjab) Assembly by-election by a margin of 10,637 votes, garnering 35,179 votes in total.

Speaking to ANI, Sanjeev Arora said, "I express my gratitude to all the citizens of Ludhiana and also thank all the volunteers, counsellors, MLAs, ministers, leaders, and especially our Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal."

The AAP candidate's wife, Sandhya Arora, also spoke to ANI and said, "I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everybody for supporting Sanjeev Arora. He is a man of development and will fulfil all the promises."

Following Sanjeev Arora's victory, AAP workers celebrated and distributed sweets in Chandigarh.

Shaktisinh Gohil resigns as Gujarat Congress chief after bypoll defeats in Visavadar, Kadi

Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil has resigned as president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) after the party’s poor performance in the Visavadar and Kadi assembly bypolls, results for which were declared today.

In a statement issued shortly after the results, Gohil said he had accepted “moral responsibility” for the defeat and had submitted his resignation “a couple of hours ago.” The Congress lost both seats to the BJP.

“I am very proud to be a disciplined soldier of India’s oldest and, of course, the best political party of India… Unfortunately, we have not succeeded today,” he said. Gohil thanked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal, Gujarat in-charge Mukul Wasnik, and also acknowledged the mentorship of Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi.

He added, “I believe that our party is more important than any position or individual. I will, of course, continue to remain a disciplined soldier of Congress. Always. Jai Congress. Jai Hind.”

Gohil had taken charge of the Gujarat Congress unit in 2023, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, where the party also struggled to make gains in the state.

In Gujarat, the results were mixed. AAP’s Gopal Italia secured the Visavadar seat with a margin of 17,554 votes over BJP’s Kirit Patel, while BJP’s Rajendra Chavda won the Kadi (SC-reserved) seat, defeating Congress’s Ramesh Chavda by 39,452 votes. These outcomes increased BJP’s tally in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly to 162 seats, with Congress at 12 and AAP at 5.

In Kerala’s Nilambur, Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath scored a major victory over CPI(M)’s M Swaraj by 11,077 votes, reflecting growing anti-incumbency against the LDF.

Meanwhile, in West Bengal’s Kaliganj seat, TMC’s Alifa Ahmed led BJP’s Ashish Ghosh by over 26,000 votes. Overall, the bypolls highlighted a resurgence for AAP and Congress while reaffirming BJP and TMC's dominance in their respective strongholds.
