A 19-year-old woman, who was six months pregnant, suffered "over 80% burns" after she was set on fire by her mother and brother in the forests of Hapur's Bahadurgarh area on Thursday evening. Her brother first slit her throat with a blade before pouring petrol on her body.Hearing her cries for help, local villagers reached the spot and admitted the young woman to a nearby hospital in Hapur from where the doctors referred her to a higher medical centre in Meerut. She continues to remain critical. The complaint was filed by a villager, Sattar (who goes by the first name), who works as a watchman. Sources said the family adopted the "extreme measure to protect family honour".Both have been arrested. During questioning, they confessed to the crime and said they couldn’t accept their unmarried daughter being pregnant. The woman was in a relationship with a local villager and her family had repeatedly cautioned her,” the ASP added. Agarwal pointed out that the woman’s father, a farmer, is yet to visit her at the hospital and a woman police constable is attending to her at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Meerut. “Her condition is very serious and doctors told us that if she does not stabilise, they might refer her to Delhi,” the senior cop added.
