The Centre has extended central excise duty exemptions on petrol blended with 22, 25, 27 and 30 per cent ethanol, according to a notification issued on June 10. Fuel blends meeting Bureau of Indian Standards norms will continue to attract a nil excise duty rate. The move comes amid rising global crude oil prices and ongoing disruptions in energy supplies linked to the West Asia crisis. The government has been promoting ethanol blending as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, improve energy security and encourage cleaner fuels. The decision follows earlier measures including excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel and export duties on diesel and aviation turbine fuel to ensure adequate domestic fuel availability.
