When the US and Israel struck Tehran on February 28, killing Supreme Leader Khamenei and dozens of Iran's most senior military figures, one name was missing from the casualty lists Esmail Qaani, commander of the IRGC's elite Quds Force and the man who inherited Qassem Soleimani's mantle after the 2020 Baghdad drone strike. Israeli media reported Qaani was among the intended targets but had escaped. Now unverified reports claim Qaani may have been arrested by Iranian authorities on suspicion of espionage for Israel with some accounts claiming he has been executed. Tehran has not confirmed or denied either claim. The man with nine lives has not been seen in public since the war began.
