On the vibrant streets of Patna, the Raja Bazar goat market swells with enthusiasm as Bakrid approaches. A bustling crowd of thousands fills the area, with over 2,000 traders showcasing an impressive array of goat breeds. Prices have surged by 25%, attributed to the climbing costs of fuel, with one goat fetching a staggering Rs 1.5 lakh.

Last-minute shoppers thronged markets on the eve of Bakrid. Heavy rush was witnessed in Sabzibag locality for purchase of variety of breads, including ‘bakarkhani’ and ‘sheermal’, which are served with various mutton delicacies. Mosques and other places of congregation also geared up for Bakrid namaz to be held on Thursday morning. However, traders in the city’s goat market were unhappy with less business this year.

Goat sellers in the city are staring at huge losses this year in the run up to Bakrid due to low turnout of customers at the traditional cattle market at Raja Bazaar amid Covid-19 pandemic. The three-day Bakrid celebrations would begin from August 1 depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.

In the run-up to Bakrid, sellers at the biggest cattle market in Raja Bazar have chalked out a plan to maintain social distancing and take safety precautions. Traders from different parts of Bihar and other states have been instructed to bring only 40% of sacrificial animals and a limited number of caretakers with them to the market that will open on Monday.

The bazaar is full of goats of different breeds brought from different parts of Bihar and states like UP and Rajasthan.

Police broke into the house of a Pakistcorrespondent, Khursheed Anwar Khan, late Thursday night without any warrants and searched his house, harassing the family, according to Dawn. The Mianwali Police, with a dozen policemen cordoned off the house, while women police officers searched the house without producing any warrants.
