Alex Ovechkin, who is widely regarded as the greatest goal scorer in
NHL history, is probably approaching the final chapter of his legendary career, as uncertainty looms around him and his future with the Washington Capitals.
Several reports are suggesting that Ovechkin might play his last match tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets, as both teams are going to play their last match of the season. Though this has not been confirmed yet, neither by the Washington Capitals star nor the team.
Over the years, Ovechkin has cemented his status as one of hockey's all-time greats. The 40-year-old forward, who broke Wayne Gretzky’s historic record in 2025 with his 895th career goal, has scored beyond 920 goals, making him the NHL’s all-time leading scorer.

NHL star Alex Ovechkin is set to feature in what could be a significant regular-season finale, amid the retirement speculation, as the Washington Capitals take on the Columbus Blue Jackets, marking the end of the 2025–26 NHL campaign for both sides.
The veteran forward, widely considered one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history, is expected to appear against the Capitals, potentially making this one of his final appearances if he opts to step away after the season.
However, he has yet to announce the decision.

Speaking on Alex Ovechkin’s journey, Capitals coach Spencer Carbury said, "His durability through his career … when it's all said and done, and you dissect how he was able to be so successful a goal-scorer and NHL player, that is a big part of it is the longevity and the durability.”
He further stated, "Him being able to consistently be in the lineup every single night is a big part of why he's been able to reach the goal record and be so consistent for so many years."
As per reports, Ovechkin was seen during the Capitals' morning skate at Nationwide Arena, but he won't speak to reporters until after the game. Besides, he recently added that his decision about retiring from the NHL or returning for another season with the Capitals won't be made until the offseason.
Moreover, according to the NHL, this season Ovechkin has scored 32 goals, 31 assists, gaining 63 points in 81 games played in total. He has broken Wayne Gretzky's record by scoring his 895th goal on April 6, 2025, against the New York Islanders. He added 32 more goals to his career ledger by leading the Capitals again to increase his total career goals to 929 in 1,572 games.
