Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf stabbing case
The Guardian’s Adria R Walker reported that 17-year-olds Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf met during a Frisco Independent School District track meet in Apr. 2025.
Karmelo attended Centennial High School, and Austin attended Memorial High School.
A rain shower started, causing confusion. Some athletes stayed on the field; some ran for shelter.
Centennial did not have a tent that day, so Karmelo sought shelter in Memorial’s tent.
A confrontation took place. This resulted in Karmelo stabbing Austin. Austin was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital.
Karmelo Anthony’s defense vs prosecutors
According to Karmelo’s defense team, he had acted in self-defense after being confronted by the Memorial High School team members.
The defense noted the height difference: Austin and his twin brother were both about 6-foot-1 and 213-pounders, while Karmelo is 5-foot-8 and about a 130-pounder.
The defense argued that Karmelo reacted to “fear and chaos.”
While the prosecutor said Austin was stabbed in a “sneak, surprise attack.”
Prosecuting authority said that Karmelo threatened Austin, saying, “Touch me and find out.”
Video evidence supported the argument that others did not turn on Karmelo and that the incident was one-on-one.
A Texas law allowed Karmelo to be treated as an adult despite being a minor at the time of the incident.
None of the jurors was Black
A trial took place in Collin County, Texas.
The Guardian reported that the attorneys selected 12 jurors and 6 alternates for the trial; none of the jurors was Black. Karmelo is Black, and Austin was white.
After a week-old trial, the jury selection gave its verdict: Karmelo Anthony, now 19, was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
