The New York Yankees are still finding ways to win games, but one big problem continues to stand out. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is going through a very tough stretch at the plate, and now questions are starting to grow around his future with the team. Chisholm has struggled badly in recent games. He is just 8-for-48 during his slump and is batting .203 this season with 31 hits, four home runs, and 14 RBIs. Because of those struggles, ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney believes the Yankees could eventually make changes at second base if things do not improve soon.
Speaking on
The Michael Kay Show, Olney explained why the situation feels different compared to young players the Yankees have stayed patient with in the past. According to Olney, Chisholm’s contract situation could become a major factor in the team’s thinking over the next few months.
Olney said, “I’m going to be really curious to see what happens with Jazz here over the next two and a half months. At some point, especially because they don’t have a future tied to him, this is not a second-year player where he’s going to be under team control the next four years. And you’re maybe going to have more patience, as they did with Anthony Volpe.
He’s a free agent at year’s end. At some point, they are going to need better production at that position, and I’m sure they’re going to be market opportunities for trades or eternally.”
Buster Olney believes New York Yankees could explore second base options if Jazz Chisholm Jr struggles continue
Right now, the Yankees still have time to figure things out, but the pressure is clearly building. Chisholm is playing on a one-year, $10.2 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent after the season. That means the Yankees may not wait too long if they feel another player gives them a better chance to win.
The team already has a few possible backup plans inside the roster. Oswaldo Cabrera and George Lombard Jr. are names that could help at second base if needed. There is also a chance the Yankees could move shortstop Anthony Volpe to second base depending on how the roster changes later in the season.
Another name connected to the Yankees recently is Ryan McMahon. The third baseman has reportedly been viewed as a possible fit if New York looks for help before the trade deadline.
For now, the Yankees are still backing Chisholm and hoping he can turn things around. Players often go through rough stretches during a long MLB season. Still, with the Yankees trying to stay strong in the playoff race, every position matters. If the struggles continue for another few weeks, New York may have to seriously think about making a move.
