Southee hits Gill on the pads | Survives with the help of a review!
Pheww! That was pretty close but Shubman Gill gets his bat down just in time. A cracker of a delivery from Tim Southee and it struck Shubman right in front. The original decision from the umpire was out and Gill went for the review straightaway. Ultra-Edge confirms that the ball hit the inside edge before hitting Gill's front pad. Gill survives an LBW call early! IND 3/0 after 2.3 overs

It (preparation) has been good. I was part of the IPL, didn't play but was training and preparing whenever I got time. So, the prep has been good. We also had a good practice session in Mumbai. It's good to be back playing at home because we haven't played in India for a while now. Their (Virat, Rohit) absence does give the others a chance to prove themselves. It (responsibility) is there obviously but I don't think I should think too much about it. This track was a bit slow the last time we played here, but did spin later.

We would have batted first as well. Looking forward to this challenge. It's mixed, but it's okay. Ajaz Patel and Somerviller have done well. We are going in with two spinners, two pacers and a spinning all-rounder debut in Rachin Ravinda.

Looking to bat first. Pitch looks really good. Generally slows down later on here. Shreyas is making his debut. We are all excited to play under the new coaching staff. I personally enjoy playing under Rahul bhai. New Zealand are a quality side. 3 spinners, 2 seamers.

Toss news!
India stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane wins the toss, opts to bat first against New Zealand in Kanpur

Last time a Test match was played here was five years ago. It was India-New Zealand back then as well. Looks very similar to the one used five years ago. Bereft of grass. We can see cracks opening up. It will be good for batting early on, but those cracks will open up. Maybe play up and down later on. The cracks are prominent already and the edges are wobbly. Ball will turn and looks abrasive as well, so reverse swing will come into play as well. I like this concept of home series, home pitch. You turn in New Zealand it looks very green. You come here this is what you expect. So players have got to adapt

Shreyas Iyer - Test player no. 303 for India
So, Shreyas Iyer will indeed be making his Test debut today! He has been handed the India Test cap by legendary Sunil Gavaskar. We are all in readiness! Just under 5 minutes to go for the toss.
08:26 (IST) Nov 25
For Black Caps, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner will be the two pacers with left-arm spin duo of Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner along with off-spinner William Somerville likely to complete the attack.
08:26 (IST) Nov 25
His battle with a technician-par-excellence Williamson will be a treat for lovers of Test cricket but the seasoned players like Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls will have their task cut-out against Ashwin and Jadeja.

But one man, itching to go out there and reaffirm his status as world's number one spinner will be Ravichandran Ashwin, who had been licking his wounds for the past few months after a royal snub by regular captain Kohli during the last series.
08:25 (IST) Nov 25
If Agarwal does well, that will keep KL Rahul on his toes and a good show from Shubman Gill will keep the team management interested in slotting him in the middle-order when the two regular openers come back.
08:25 (IST) Nov 25
In the batting line-up for the first Test, only Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal have played more than 10 Tests.
08:25 (IST) Nov 25
But this also gives head coach Rahul Dravid a chance to check out what his back-up bench strength is before the away tour of South Africa which starts in less than a month's time.
08:25 (IST) Nov 25
It is indeed a rarity to find an Indian Test team that is without its hit opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Also missing from line-up is skipper Virat Kohli and a genuine match-winning keeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

Shreyas Iyer will be making his debut but I can't reveal anything about combination
