And with that, we wrap up proceedings from this encounter, where England Under-19 get their first win of the World Cup, but Pakistan Under-19 will have to wait a bit longer. Group C action will resume here at the Takashinga Cricket Club in Harare on Sunday, 18th January, when England return to face co-hosts Zimbabwe U-19, while Pakistan will take on Scotland U-19 on Monday, 19th January. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7.30 am GMT, and as always, you can join us early for all the build-up ahead of both clashes. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
Thomas Rew, the victorious skipper of England Under-19, mentions that at the halfway mark, his team felt they were slightly under par with their total, but the bowlers' performance in the second innings was outstanding, and it greatly pleased the team. He thanked and praised the groundsmen for their efforts in preparing the field despite the torrential rain, which made it possible to have a game. Thomas describes the wicket as good for cricket, although it did deteriorate slightly as the game progressed. The team's bowling plan was to stick to their stock line, target the stumps, and build consistent pressure. They backed this up with sharp fielding and took their chances when they came, holding onto tough catches. Thomas believes that this approach was key to bowling the opposition out. He acknowledges that the outfield was tricky for ground fielding due to the wobbly surface, but the team adapted well to the conditions and handled them smartly. Thomas credits the team's build-up through warm-up games, which gave them confidence and momentum. Overall, he says that he is pleased with the team's performance and feels they are in a good place. He is excited to carry the momentum of their first win forward into the rest of the tournament.
Farhan Yousaf, the captain of Pakistan Under-19, says that they did well in the first innings, but could not do well with the bat. Adds that the middle order did not fire, but that can happen in cricket. Says that he is happy with his knock but would have liked to be in a winning cause.
Caleb Falconer is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his excellent knock. He starts off by giving credit to his fellow batters for their support and acknowledges the challenging conditions on the field. He adopted a patient approach, waiting for opportunities to score and focusing on pushing the field and running hard between wickets. He also notes that the wicket was tricky, with variable bounce and low-keeping qualities, which made shot selection difficult. However, he used his slow start to his advantage, taking time to settle in and build a solid foundation before scoring more freely. He highlights the importance of the partnership with Ralphie Albert, who supported him and helped steady the innings through good communication and careful batting. Falconer also commends the bowlers and fielders for their excellent work, particularly in defending the total. Falconer is thrilled with the team's first win in the World Cup, describing it as an unbelievably good feeling. He also says that he is looking forward to carrying the momentum into the next game and has a simple plan for the day off, rest, recovery, and preparation for the next challenge.
Presentation Time...
For England Under-19, Alex Green set things up perfectly with two early strikes, and the pressure only increased as James Minto and Farhan Ahmed added two more to leave the opposition on the back foot. The spinners then controlled the middle overs, keeping runs in check, with Ralphie Albert rewarded for his disciplined bowling with a couple of wickets. Farhan Yousaf remained the only real threat, but Ben Mayes' sharp fielding broke the key stand, and once Minto returned to remove the opposition skipper, the result was all but sealed. Manny Lumsden's tidy catching and a late wicket capped off a complete team effort.
Earlier in the match, England Under-19 were asked to bat first and managed to put up a competitive total, though they will feel there was room for more. The top order showed promise, with Ben Dawkins and Ben Mayes getting set but failing to turn their starts into something substantial. The innings was steadied by a crucial 80-run stand between Caleb Falconer and Ralphie Albert, with Caleb anchoring the effort through a well-compiled 66 off 73 deliveries. With the ball for Pakistan Under-19, leg-spinner Ahmed Hussain stood out, returning an impressive three-wicket haul, while Ali Raza, Momin Qamar, and Abdul Subhan chipped in with two wickets apiece. The fielding effort was just as sharp, highlighted by a couple of brilliant catches and a superb run-out effected by skipper Farhan Yousaf.
Pakistan Under-19 never got the flying start they were hoping for in the chase. The much-talked-about pair of Sameer Minhas and Usman Khan failed to make an impact, and with little support from the middle order, they soon slipped into trouble at 85/6, with skipper Farhan Yousaf the lone bright spot. He battled hard for his side and found some support when Abdul Subhan joined him, the pair putting together a gritty 48-run stand to briefly revive hopes. However, a mix-up between the two led to a run-out, leaving Yousaf isolated once again. The captain did bring up a fighting half-century, but an attempt to up the tempo saw him depart for 65 with over 50 runs still required. Momin Qamar struck a couple of powerful blows late on, but another moment of poor judgment involving Ali Raza resulted in a further run-out, effectively sealing Pakistan’s fate.
England Under-19 kick off their World Cup campaign with a morale-boosting win. It was far from straightforward, as they first had to dig deep with the bat on a challenging surface before putting up a modest total. Then, in defence, they were disciplined and clinical with both ball and in the field, executing their plans to near perfection and keeping a strong Pakistan Under-19 batting line-up firmly in check.
Manny Lumsden to Momin Qamar, OUT! run out (Ben Mayes / Thomas Rew).OUT! RAZA IS RUN OUT! That is not the way Pakistan wanted things to end. They still had Qamar, who could have pulled something special, but Ali Raza just gifted the last wicket to England unknowingly. This is on a length, outside off, Momin Qamar pulls it through the vacant mid-wicket region and calls for a double, but cancels the plan as the fielder is quick on the ball. Both the batters get back on their crease, but the throw from Ben Mayes toward the keeper's end is going to hit Raza. Therefore, he just gets away from the crease to dodge the ball, but Thomas Rew gloves it and instantly breaks the stumps. The decision has been sent upstaires and the Third Umpire sees that Raza realizes it late that he is outside the crease, and he is late to drag the bat inside the popping crease. Disappointment on Raza's face and in the Pakistan Under-19 camp. England Under-19 win by 37 runs.
What happened there? A complete lapse of concentration from Ali Raza, and that is a very disappointing end to this game. Raza at the batter's end tries to let the ball go to the keeper, but while doing so, he wanders outside of his crease. Thomas Rew collects the throw and quickly breaks the stumps and the replay shows that Raza never made it back.
