... THE RUN CHASE ...
Runs on the board in a knockout - advantage to the batting side? Ummm... maybe not for this clash. Australia have got 134 but with the pitch predicted to get better for batting under lights, they seem to be 15-20 runs short. Unlike South Africa, who managed to keep Australia quiet with dot balls, the defending champions cannot do with just dots. They will need wickets and consistently.
Nonkululeko Mlaba is having a chat with Kass Naidoo. Mlaba says that change of pace is what has been working for her in this tournament. For this game, she says that bowling slow worked for her. Details that it was really hard for her to bowl 4 overs as Australia usually come hard at her but she managed it. Is confident that South Africa can chase down 135.
A frustrating innings with the bat for Australia. They never got used to the surface despite getting partnerships of 50, 31 and 35 for the last 3 wickets. That 5th wicket stand did come quickly, in 19 balls, but barring that, the defending champions simply struggled to time the ball. Beth Mooney showed some resolve, trying to hang in there till the end, before she got run out for 44. Ellyse Perry was the only one who looked confident at the crease while Phoebe Litchfield did well to give her bowlers something to bowl at.
After choosing to bowl, the Protea Women wasted no time in being on the money. Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka delivered the early blows and after that, even though the wickets did not come in clusters, the African side was disciplined. Just 11 boundaries conceded, not even a single six, with four of those 11 fours coming in the last 3 overs. They conceded just 35/2 in the Powerplay, 51/1 in the 9 middle overs of the phase and 48/2 in the last 5. That last part might just seem a bit expensive but you do expect that from oppositions with wickets in hand. Everyone was economical with Ayabonga Khaka being the pick with 2/24 in 4 overs.
Well, a superlative bowling performance from South Africa Women. Barring the last 3 overs, where they conceded 31, they never let Australia off the boil. The bowling was decent overall, hitting the right lengths and lines, and pretty disciplined, with only 2 wides and 1 no ball as the extra balls.
Ayabonga Khaka to Ellyse Perry, OUT! CAUGHT! Well taken by Tazmin Brits. So unlike the Aus-Ind match, the last ball does not go for a six. Low full toss, around off, Ellyse Perry looks to swing hard but cannot quite find enough power, nor the elevation. The ball initially goes straight to deep mid-wicket but towards the end, it just tails away a bit. Brits steadies herself initially but then has to adjust, which she does superbly, by moving to her right, with the angle. The catch is completed and AUSTRALIA WOMEN HAVE BEEN RESTRICTED TO 134/5!
