Australia vs Ireland Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Australia clinch 67-run win over Ireland

Australia vs Ireland Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Australia produced a dominant all-round performance to outclass Ireland by 67 runs in their opening Group B fixture of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday.

T20 World Cup: Schedule | Points Table

Asked to bat on a sluggish pitch, Australia overcame an early setback when stand-in skipper Travis Head was run out in the second over. Ireland had earlier dropped Head in the first over, but they quickly regrouped. Josh Inglis counterattacked with three early boundaries, while Cameron Green flexed his power with towering sixes aided by the Colombo breeze. Green eventually mistimed a shot to midwicket, and Inglis fell to a stunning full-stretch catch from Paul Stirling.

Harry Tector dismissed Glenn Maxwell, but Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Stoinis rebuilt the innings with a steady 61-run stand. Both batters rotated the strike effectively before Humphreys bowled Renshaw. Stoinis struck a six before departing, as Ireland conceded 53 runs in the last five overs, allowing Australia to reach 182 for 6.

In reply, Nathan Ellis led the charge in the absence of Mitchell Marsh and injured senior quicks. He removed Ross Adair and Ben Calitz early, finishing with 4 for 12. Adam Zampa then tore through the middle order with 4 for 23. Dockrell’s 41 delayed the inevitable, but Ellis returned to seal the win as Ireland were restricted to 115 for 9 in 16.5 overs.

Mark Adair to Marcus Stoinis, A lot of elixir in the tank despite humidity. Short of a length, climbing on the shoulder height, on middle. Marcus Stoinis waits, waits, and waits for it before pulling it to the deep mid-wicket region. The call is for two as the fielder gets across and gets rid of the ball. Stoinis does not slide his bat in, just skates through to get in as the fielder scores a direct hit at the batting end. He though, is comfortably in.

Mark Adair to Marcus Stoinis, DROPPED! A big chance goes begging here. Short of a length and outside off, Marcus Stoinis backs away and slaps it but does not connect with it from the middle. He shouts 'No, no' as the ball flies towards extra cover. Gareth Delany dives low to his left but fails to hold on to it. Stoinis will look to make the Irish pay now in these last few overs.

BOWLED! A threatening 61-run partnership is broken for the fifth wicket. A back-of-a-length projectile from Humphreys, aimed straight at the stumps going in with the arm, 110.2 kph. Renshaw hangs back, trying to nudge it on the leg side, but he is late as the excessive pace does him in. Gets an inside edge, and the stumps are rattled. Barry McCarthy to Matt Renshaw, Another piece of excellent running between the wickets. Lands it around off, an off cutter, on a length that stays low. Matt Renshaw waits on it and pulls it along the ground, wide of deep mid-wicket and they sprint back for the second run. This brings up the 50-run partnership between Renshaw and Stoinis. They have worked very hard out there in the heat and humidity, but more importantly, have hung in there, keeping the dot-ball percentage very low.

DRINKS BREAK. It has been a slow burn since Maxwell's departure. But these two have played the situation very well against the barrage of spin deployed by Ireland. The run rate is not that great, but it is not too underwhelming by any means for Australia. If anyone from these two bats till the end, they can easily get to that 180-run mark, or even more than that. Ireland will look to break this partnership as quickly as possible. They’ve done a decent job keeping the scoring in check so far, and they will need to maintain that discipline right to the end. George Dockrell (3-0-22-1) will bowl out. He replaces Matthew Humphreys.

Australia vs Ireland Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa delivered a clinical bowling display as Australia defeated Ireland by 67 runs in their Group B opener of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday. Defending 183, Australia restricted Ireland to 115 for 9 in 16.5 overs.

Ellis set the tone with a devastating opening spell, claiming 3 for 9 in his first three overs and finishing with superb figures of 4 for 12 in 3.5 overs. Zampa complemented him perfectly, taking 4 for 23 in four overs to dismantle the middle and lower order. George Dockrell’s 41 off 29 balls helped Ireland cross the 100-run mark, while Paul Stirling was retired hurt and did not bat.

Earlier, Australia posted 182 for 6 after opting to bat on a sluggish surface. Josh Inglis (37) and Cameron Green (21) provided early momentum before Matthew Renshaw (37) and Marcus Stoinis (45) stitched together a crucial 61-run partnership. Ireland’s spinners bowled with discipline but were hampered by dropped catches, conceding 53 runs in the final five overs.

With Mitchell Marsh injured and senior quicks unavailable, Australia’s under-strength attack rose to the occasion to begin their campaign in commanding fashion.
