AUS vs SA Highlights, 3rd T20I: Australia beat South Africa by 2 wickets, clinch series 2-1

Australia vs South Africa Live Score, 3rd T20I: Australia clinched a tense two-wicket win over South Africa in Cairns on Saturday, taking the T20I series 2-1 thanks to a composed all-round performance from Glenn Maxwell. Set 173 to win, Australia appeared in control at 66-1 with captain Mitchell Marsh striking 54, but a sudden collapse saw them slump to 122-6 in the 14th over. With South Africa on top, Maxwell responded with a superb unbeaten 62 off 36 deliveries.

The contest tightened further when Corbin Bosch dismissed Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis off consecutive balls late in the chase, but Maxwell sealed victory with a boundary on the penultimate delivery, celebrating passionately with his teammates.

Earlier, Marsh had opted to bowl first in seam-friendly conditions, and Josh Hazlewood struck early to remove Aiden Markram. South Africa were boosted by Dewald Brevis, fresh from his record 125* in Darwin, who blasted a 22-ball fifty. However, after Maxwell dropped a tough chance, he redeemed himself with a stunning diving catch to dismiss Brevis for 53. South Africa lost momentum, managing 172-7.

Australia’s innings mirrored the visitors’ — promising starts undone by clusters of wickets. Tim David (17) and Cameron Green (9) fell cheaply before Maxwell’s heroics turned the tide.

The players wore black armbands in memory of Bob Simpson, Australia’s former captain and coach who passed away aged 89. Cairns, hosting its first T20I, witnessed a Maxwell special as Australia edged home. The two teams now shift focus to the ODI series beginning Tuesday.

Is that gone? There is a run out appeal against Dewald Brevis which has been referred upstairs. No celebrations in the Aussie camp and the first replay shows why. Brevis has dived into the crease before Inglis could even touch the stumps.

Glenn Maxwell to Tristan Stubbs, JUST IN! Brilliant work from Travis Head, nonetheless! Flatter and fuller on the stumps, drifting in. Stubbs switches his stance and reverse sweeps it to pierce the backward point and short third gap. But Head, stationed at the former position, is quick to dive full stretch and stop the ball. The batters skate through to steal a single, and seeing Brevis struggling to make his ground, Head releases a rocket throw towards Josh Inglis. Brevis is forced to dive to drag his bat in as Inglis breaks the stumps in a snap. However, the replay shows that Brevis is just in.

Adam Zampa to Ryan Rickelton, OUT! STRAIGHT UP, AND TAKEN! Adam Zampa, who has quite a decent record in white ball cricket at this venue, strikes in his first over! Pushes it through, full and outside the off stump line. It is the googly and is not picked up off the hands of the bowler by Ryan Rickelton. He goes for the premeditated sweep shot, but the ball spins away and takes the top edge. It balloons up in the night sky, but just to the right of the keeper. Josh Inglis takes a few steps to his right, settles under it and gobbles up a regulation catch. South Africa lose their third wicket on 49. Ryan Rickelton departs for a run-a-ball 13.

Adam Zampa to Dewald Brevis, IN THE AIR... Dropped! If anyone could have gotten to that ball, it was Glenn Maxwell, but he didn't manage to catch it. Dropped short from Zampa, on the stumps. Dewald Brevis hangs back and tries to pull it over the leg side, but ends up slicing it up miles in the air, to the left of long on. Glenn Maxwell runs to his left, puts in a dive, but rather than going for the catch with both hands, he sticks his left hand out and goes for a one-handed attempt, and puts it down. The batters cross over. Maxwell appears to be in some pain as he lands on his left shoulder, but eventually gets back on his feet and takes his position.

Nathan Ellis to Lhuan-dre Pretorius, OUT! CAUGHT! Sometimes, your strength can be your weakness. Smart captaincy from Mitchell Marsh. It is well documented that Lhuan-dre Pretorius likes to play square on the leg side. So logically, captains might prefer to have a deep mid-wicket and give him the single. Instead, Marsh leaves deep mid-wicket open and keeps only one man inside the ring at square on the leg side. Ellis bowls it short and asks Pretorius to go for his favourite shot. The youngster obliges and pulls but neither does he go over the top, nor does he keep the ball down. Finds the only man at mid-wicket, where Aaron Hardie makes no mistake. The 30-run stand is broken and a disappointed Pretorius trudges off, after looking so good for 24 (15). South Africa are 32/2 after 4.2 overs.

Australia vs South Africa Live Score, 3rd T20I: Glenn Maxwell produced a match-winning performance to guide Australia to a thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in Cairns, sealing the T20I series 2-1. Chasing 173, Australia were reeling at 122-6 in the 14th over when Maxwell took charge, finishing unbeaten on 62 off 36 balls. Despite late drama, with Corbin Bosch taking two wickets in two balls, Maxwell struck the penultimate delivery to the boundary to secure the win.

Earlier, Mitchell Marsh elected to field in seam-friendly conditions. Josh Hazlewood immediately struck by dismissing Aiden Markram, while Dewald Brevis threatened again after his record 125* in game two. Brevis reached a quick half-century before Maxwell atoned for an earlier drop with a brilliant diving catch to dismiss him for 53. South Africa’s innings lost momentum and ended at 172/7.

Marsh (54) and Travis Head gave Australia a strong start, but a collapse of 6-56 left the chase in jeopardy. Maxwell’s composed counterattack ensured victory and series success.

Players wore black armbands to honour former captain-coach Bob Simpson, who passed away at 89. The teams now turn to the three-match ODI series in Cairns starting Tuesday.
