Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: First session of 18th Lok Sabha likely to commence around June 15, Sources

The Cabinet is likely to meet soon after the swearing-in ceremony on Sunday evening at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.The 17th Lok Sabha was dissolved on June 5 by President Droupadi Murmu on the advice of the Union Cabinet.

The next day, the president will address a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, thus formally inaugurating the session, the sources added.The final call on the dates of the session will be taken by the new Union Cabinet. During the session, Prime Minister Modi will also introduce members of his Council of Ministers to both the Houses.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is likely to begin around June 15, sources said Friday. The first session will commence in the third week of June with the oath-taking by the newly elected candidates as members of the House, the sources said, adding the oath-taking is likely to continue for two days, following which a new Speaker will be elected.

Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki, his younger brother and three others were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on Friday in connection with setting fire to a woman's house in a bid to grab her land.

Police had booked Irfan Solanki, his brother Rizwan Solanki and about four dozen others for rioting and arson 19 months ago.

The President will administer the Oath of Office and Secrecy to the Prime Minister and other members of the Union Council of Ministers on June 09, 2024 at 07:15 pm at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Congress' top leadership will deliberate on the Lok Sabha election results and chalk out its future strategy at a crucial meeting of the party's working committee on Saturday.

An extended meeting of the party's top decision-making body -- the Congress Working Committee (CWC) -- will be held at Hotel Ashok at 11 am where Congress Legislature Party leaders and Pradesh Congress Committee presidents from various states will analyse its performance and suggest measures to strengthen the organisation.

The party's top brass, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, besides other leaders will participate in the deliberations.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who has convened the meeting, will also host a dinner for all extended CWC members and party MPs at Hotel Ashok.

A day after publicly stating that his reassignment from Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency to Bardhaman-Durgapur was a mistake by the BJP leadership, outspoken saffron party leader Dilip Ghosh on Friday questioned the rationale behind relocating established leaders like him from winnable constituencies to challenging electoral battlegrounds.

Ghosh, a former BJP state president who won the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Medinipur, suffered a crushing defeat in the Bardhaman-Durgapur seat in the 2024 polls, losing to TMC's Kirti Azad by a margin of nearly 1.38 lakh votes.

In his initial reaction after the electoral setback, Ghosh had said, "It is now established that sending me to contest from a new constituency was a mistake."

With JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar emerging as a pivotal figure in the formation of the NDA government at the Centre, party workers in the state capital have prominently displayed a large poster featuring the Bihar Chief Minister, accompanied by the words 'Tiger Zinda Hai' (Tiger is alive).

In response to the poster, several party leaders asserted that labeling Nitish Kumar as the 'tiger' is appropriate, saying that his influence significantly bolstered the NDA's performance in the Lok Sabha polls within the state.

The Congress on Friday demanded a high-level investigation under the Supreme Court's supervision into "irregularities" in NEET for medical courses and accused the BJP of cheating youngsters and playing with their futures.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said paper leaks, rigging and corruption have become an integral part of many examinations, including the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

"The Modi government is directly responsible for this. For the candidates appearing in recruitment exams, then facing several irregularities, getting caught in the labyrinth of paper leaks, is playing with their futures. The BJP has cheated the youth of the country," he said in a post in Hindi on X.

"We demand that a high-level investigation should be conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court so that our talented students appearing in NEET and other exams get justice," he added.

Urging the Parliament to intervene in the process of jailed candidates becoming Members of Parliament, Senior advocate Vikas Singh said that the number of legislators with criminal charges is on the rise adding that it is an irony that "people in jails cannot vote, but can contest and win elections".

"The makers of the Constitution would have never thought that such people would be elected to the Parliament. A constitutional amendment is needed to specify the charges, holding which, the candidates will be disqualified from contesting elections. The irony is, that people in jails cannot vote, but can contest and win elections. A Parliamentary seat cannot lie vacant for more than 60 days, irrespective of whether they have taken an oath. The Parliament should step in and not let such people get elected," Senior advocate Vikas Singh told ANI.

Addressing the meeting of newly elected MPs of the alliance on Friday in Parliament, Prime Minister said, "The NDA government has given good governance to the country and in a way, just saying NDA becomes synonymous with good governance. Poor welfare and good governance have been paramount in the focus of all of us."

He also vowed to continue his efforts towards consenus as he called the NDA the most successful alliance.

"I assure the people of the country that the majority they gave us to run the government, it will be our effort that we will strive towards consensus and leave no stone unturned towards taking the country forward...NDA has completed around thrr decades, it is no ordinary thing...I can say that this is the most successful alliance," the prime minister said.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday said that the proposal to name Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the leader of the Lok Sabha, leader of the BJP and NDA Parliamentary Party is the voice of the country.

Supporting the proposal which was introduced by senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh at the NDA Parliamentary meeting, Amit Shah said, "This proposal is not only the desire of the people sitting here. This is the proposal of 140 crore people in the country. This is the voice of the country that PM Modi leads the country for the next 5 years."

On the occasion, Rajnath Singh said that the NDA government received praise from all over the world due to the efficient government being run by Prime Minister Modi.

At the meeting, Kumar expressed confidence in the future electoral success of the NDA, saying, "Next time when you come, the people who have won here and there this time will lose next time. We are fully confident about it, ('Agli baar jab aap aaiye toh kuch log jo idhar udhar jeet gaya hai, agli baar sab haarega. Humko poora bharosa hai')" He criticized the opposition bloc, accusing them of failing to contribute anything meaningful to the country.
