Coronavirus live updates: India reports over 3k Covid deaths for 4th day
India on Friday posted a record daily rise of over 3.86 lakh new Covid-19 cases and continued to post over 3,000 deaths for the third consecutive day, as per Union health ministry data updated at 8 am. With 386,452 new cases recorded on Friday, India's tally of total Covid-19 cases now stands at 1,87,62,976, the highest since the pandemic started in 2019. The death jumped by 3,498 over the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 2,08,330, according to the health ministry data. Stay with TOI for all the updates on coronavirus

SC said there appears to be no shortage from the affidavit of the Centre. How do we resolve this when there is availability of oxygen but apparent deficiency in Delhi and other areas of some states, it asked.

SC asked Centre whether oxygen availability is adequate in India given the average demand of 8,500 MT per day.
SG said 10000 MT oxygen is available on a daily basis. “There is no shortage of O2. But availability in some areas may be deficient because of inadequate lifting by states.”

Centre tells SC that Delhi is unable to lift the allocated oxygen quota because of inadequate number of tankers engaged by Delhi government. Centre says Delhi is in the process of acquiring more tankers and situation will ease soon.

Centre says whatever oxygen is reaching is because of Centre arranging tankers for Delhi. This remark from SG Tushar Mehta came when the SC said, “can we tell patients and relatives about oxygen shortage because of non-lifting of oxygen quota because of shortage of tankers?”

SC said the differential pricing of vaccine for the Centre, States and private hospitals is very very disturbing. “What happens to the marginalised and SC/ST population? Should they be left to the mercy of private hospitals,” it asked.

SC said government must consider National Immunisation Programme for various vaccines and must think of providing free of cost vaccination to all citizens. It says the private manufacturers cannot be left to decide which state should get how much quantity vaccines.

In a big order, the SC tells states, Centre and all DGPs not to take any action against anyone posting shortage of oxygen, beds or doctors as spreading rumour. If any action is taken against such posts by citizens in distress, we will haul the police for contempt, SC says

Scheduled international flight suspension extended till May-end
The government has extended suspension of scheduled international flights till May 31, 2021. However Vande Bharat Mission and scheduled flights under the travel bubbles India has so far created — which are currently not suspended by other countries — will continue and people eligible as per government norms can fly to and from India on them. Scheduled international flights were suspended on March 23, 2020, and the severity of the pandemic has meant that even after nearly 14 months there is no sign of the same resuming anytime in a hurry.
