Coronavirus live updates: Nearly 2 million cases in August, India sets a global Covid record

The growth rate in both fresh cases and fatalities not only increased after a dip, but more than doubled compared to the preceding week.

Not all French classrooms can safely reopen Tuesday, the country's education minister acknowledged Sunday, as a persistent rise in coronavirus infections jeopardizes the government's push to get France's 12.9 million schoolchildren back into class this week. Like many governments around the world, France and Britain want to reopen schools starting Tuesday to reduce the learning gaps between rich and poor students that were worsened by the virus lockdown this spring, and to get parents back to work and revive the ailing economy.

Around 30 per cent of the coronavirus patients admitted to Delhi hospitals in August were from other states, according to government data. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in June, had predicted an exponential rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the national capital and decided to reserve beds in Delhi government-run hospitals only for city residents. But, the decision was overturned by Lt Governor Anil Baijal.

With a spike of 78,761 new cases, India's Covid-19 tally crossed 35-lakh mark, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Sunday.The country reported 948 deaths in the last 24 hours.A total of 35,42,734 coronavirus cases have been reported in the country, as per MoHFW, which includes 7,65,302 active cases, 27,13,934 cured/discharged/migrated and 63,498 fatalities.

The count of Covid-19 cases in Nashik district of Maharashtra reached 36,490 on Sunday with a single-day addition of 1,170 such patients, health officials said.The virus claimed six more lives, which took the death toll in the district to 862, they said.
