Election 2026 Highlights: TMC has destroyed Bengal with its 'cut-money' politics, says Amit Shah at rally in Debra

Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala Assembly Election 2026: Voter turnout in the ongoing Assembly elections saw a steady start on Thursday morning, with participation recorded at 38.92% in Assam, 33.28% in Kerala, and 37.06% in Puducherry by 11am.

Polling began early today, in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, bringing over 5.3 crore voters to thousands of booths to decide the fate of governments in two states and one union territory. The single-phase elections will cover 140 seats in Kerala, 126 in Assam, and 30 in Puducherry, with polling scheduled from 7 am to evening. Extensive security measures, webcasting, and logistical arrangements have been put in place to ensure smooth conduct.

In Assam, the contest is primarily bipolar, with the BJP-led NDA seeking a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Congress-led opposition, led by Gaurav Gogoi, hopes to reclaim power after a decade, while regional players such as AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and Assam Jatiya Parishad may influence outcomes in select constituencies. The state has around 2.5 crore voters, including over 1.25 crore women, first-time voters, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, casting their ballots across 31,490 polling stations.

Kerala’s 140 constituencies feature a battle between continuity and comeback. The Left Democratic Front, led by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, seeks a rare third consecutive term, challenging the Congress-led United Democratic Front, which is campaigning on anti-incumbency, governance concerns, and past electoral setbacks. The BJP-led NDA is also attempting to convert incremental gains into a stronger assembly presence. The electorate of 2.71 crore, with women forming a majority, will decide the state’s political future.

In Puducherry, a multi-cornered fight unfolds among the NDA, Congress-DMK bloc, and actor Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Around 9.5 lakh voters will choose from 294 candidates across 1,099 polling stations in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. Special arrangements for senior citizens and differently-abled voters, drone surveillance, and enhanced security have been deployed to ensure a smooth voting process. The verdict for all three regions will be announced on May 4, alongside results from West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

West Bengal polls: 'Double-engine government is absolutely essential', PM Modi says in Purba Medinipur
While addressing an election gathering in Purba Medinipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, Bengal's best interest lies in PM and CM working together.

He asserted that rather than animosity towards Prime Ministry, a double-engine government is the necessity of the state.

"Bengal's best interest does not lie in animosity towards the Prime Minister; rather, the people stand to gain the most if both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister work together. That is precisely why a double-engine government is absolutely essential for Bengal. A double-engine government will make Bengal self-reliant in the sectors of fisheries and seafood... The BJP established a separate Ministry dedicated to Fisheries. After decades of independence, our government, for the very first time, created a distinct Ministry of Fisheries to address the needs of fishermen, their families, and the Blue Economy as a whole. Not only did we create a separate Ministry, but the BJP has also allocated a distinct and record-breaking budget for the welfare of fishermen. Furthermore, the BJP has provided access to the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) facility for fishermen. The BJP has also provided insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh for fishermen; lakhs of our fellow fishermen have already availed themselves of this benefit. Once a BJP government is formed here, every Central government scheme will be implemented in the state with great speed and efficiency...," the PM said.

Reports of unusual voter movement have emerged in the past 24 hours ahead of polling in lower Assam, with people arriving by buses and trains from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala and other states. The region is considered sensitive due to concerns over illegal migration from Bangladesh, while fresh allegations suggest attempts by some Hindi-speaking individuals to vote unlawfully.

In Barpeta district, many Muslim voters arriving by train said they had returned from workplaces outside the state to cast their ballots in constituencies such as Jania and Mandia, where they hold significant electoral influence. Authorities said such movement is common during elections but assured vigilance.

Karnataka bypolls: Voting under way in two assembly segments
Voting is underway on Thursday for by-elections in the Bagalkot and Davanagere South Assembly constituencies in Karnataka, necessitated by the deaths of senior Congress MLAs H Y Meti and Shamanur Shivashankarappa. Counting is scheduled for 4 May.

While the results may not immediately alter the political landscape, the contest is a matter of prestige for both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. The Congress is striving to retain both seats, whereas the BJP aims to secure victories and dent the ruling party, which is facing internal leadership tensions.

In Bagalkot, over 2.59 lakh voters will cast ballots across 319 polling stations, with nine candidates contesting. Davanagere South has over 2.31 lakh voters and 25 candidates across 284 booths.

After voting day across Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, over 5.3 crore electors headed to the polls to decide the fate of governments in two states and one union territory.

Polling continued till evening yesterday, with extensive security, webcasting, and logistical arrangements in place to ensure smooth conduct. This election marks a crucial political test for both regional and national parties.

In Assam, the 126-seat assembly sees a largely bipolar contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and a Congress-led opposition front. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeks a third consecutive term, while the Congress, led by Gaurav Gogoi, aims for a comeback. Regional players such as the AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and Assam Jatiya Parishad could impact margins in key constituencies. Around 2.5 crore voters, including first-time voters, women, and senior citizens, are expected to cast their ballots across 31,490 polling stations.

Kerala’s 140 constituencies face a contest between continuity and comeback. The Left Democratic Front, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, seeks a rare third consecutive term, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front is targeting anti-incumbency and governance concerns. The BJP-led NDA is attempting to expand its foothold. Over 2.71 crore voters, including a female-majority electorate, will decide the outcome.

Puducherry’s 30-seat assembly election is more fragmented, with the NDA, Congress-DMK bloc, and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in the fray. Around 9.5 lakh voters will select from 294 candidates. Special arrangements have been made for senior citizens and differently-abled voters. Results for all three regions will be declared on May 4, alongside West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
