By Susmita SameeraNaanu Karunakara opens by introducing a husband, wife, and child sharing a joyful bike ride filled with laughter and affection. The warmth of the moment is quickly interrupted when the bike comes to a halt because there is not enough petrol in the tank. In that brief scene, the film establishes both the emotional core of the story and the harsh financial reality faced by its protagonist.Karunakara is an aspiring filmmaker from a modest background who dreams of becoming a director. He works as an assistant director, takes up films and advertising shoots, and is even willing to do painting jobs whenever work becomes scarce. Despite his constant struggles, his greatest source of strength is his loving wife and son. Their home may lack financial security, but it is rich in affection, understanding, and hope. One of the film’s strongest aspects is the way it portrays Karunakara not merely as a struggling artist, but as a devoted husband and father. His determination to protect his family from the consequences of his ambitions makes him deeply admirable. The film beautifully highlights the emotional burden of parenthood, especially the silent sacrifices parents make to fulfil even the smallest wishes of their children. At its heart, the story revolves around Karunakara’s attempt to earn enough money to buy his son a toy car. While this may seem like a simple desire, the film turns it into a moving reflection on the realities of middle-class parenting. There is a particularly affecting idea running through the narrative: by the time parents finally gather enough resources to fulfil a child’s wish, the child may have already outgrown it. The film captures the urgency behind these small dreams and reminds viewers how difficult it can be for parents to be heroes in their children’s eyes. The relationship between Karunakara (Aryan Tejas) and his wife Mamatha (Radha Bhagavathi) is another major strength of the film. Their bond is built on mutual understanding and quiet support. She stands by his dreams, while also recognising the hardships he endures for the family. Their chemistry gives the film much of its emotional weight and relatability. The film succeeds because of its simplicity and realism. It does not rely on grand twists or dramatic spectacle, but instead focuses on everyday struggles and emotions that many viewers will connect with. At the same time, the screenplay does have weaker stretches. Certain scenes feel prolonged and occasionally resemble the pacing of a television serial. However, the sincerity of the emotions helps the film overcome many of these flaws. The performances play a crucial role in keeping the story engaging. Aryan Tejas delivers a convincing performance as Karunakara, bringing both vulnerability and determination to the role. Radha Bhagavati is equally impressive as Mamatha, and together they create a believable and emotionally resonant couple. Bhavish Gowda leaves an impact as the son, while senior actors such as Kari Subbu, Apoorva Shri, BM Venkatesh, and MK Mutt contribute effectively in supporting roles.Overall, Naanu Karunakara is a simple family drama driven by emotion, warmth, and relatable struggles. Though it has its flaws and some slow moments, the film ultimately leaves the audience with a sense of satisfaction and empathy. For viewers looking for a heartfelt story about family, sacrifice, and the challenges of parenthood, this film is worth watching.
