By Susmita SameeraMathe Male Hoyyuthide is based on a short story written by K Sadashiva and revolves around college principal and literature professor Ranganath (Jayavardhan). Set within a college campus, the story follows the love story between Narahari (Likith) and Chaitra (Bhoomika Gowda), which becomes the center of discussion among the staff and students. While those around them react emotionally and impulsively to the young relationship, Ranganath observes the situation with maturity and empathy, trying to understand the emotions of the students rather than judging them.Alongside this narrative, the film gradually unfolds Ranganath’s own past and the reason he has remained single for so many years. His love story with Kasturi (Sulaksha Kaira), forms the emotional backbone of the film and eventually connects with the present-day story of Narahari and Chaitra. One of the film’s strongest aspects is its visual atmosphere. The landscapes of Malenadu and the constant presence of rain are beautifully utilised throughout the film. The college setting also adds to the mood, creating a calm and picturesque ambience that suits the emotional tone of the story. The film handles themes such as one-sided love, heartbreak, parenting, and the tendency of elders to react harshly to young love with a certain level of maturity. Its attempt to encourage understanding instead of impulsive judgement works effectively in several moments. However, the film struggles heavily in its technical and performance aspects. Many scenes feel staged, and several actors appear uncomfortable in front of the camera. The lip-sync issues are noticeable, while the sound design and background score often feel misplaced. Editing is another major drawback and becomes evident across the film.Despite these flaws, the writing and emotional core manage to hold attention, particularly in the second half. The interactions involving Ranganath carry emotional weight, especially when he begins to see reflections of his own past in Narahari. Their heartfelt conversations and the lingering memories of Ranganath’s unfinished love story bring out the film’s bittersweet emotion effectively, leaving behind a gentle emotional impact.
