JD(U) crosses one-crore membership mark in Bihar

Patna: In a historic organisational triumph, the JD(U), led by its national president and former chief minister Nitish Kumar, officially broke its own records on Wednesday by registering over one crore primary members across Bihar.The high-octane 2025-28 membership campaign, launched in Dec last year, reached its ambitious goal in less than six months. Speaking at the party’s state headquarters here, JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha announced that the party formally enrolled exactly 1,00,01,925 primary members by Wednesday.“During the 2022-2025 organisational session, the JD(U) enrolled a total of 72 lakh primary members,” party’s then state general secretary (headquarters) Mrityunjay Kumar Singh told TOI over phone on Wednesday. Singh was the in charge of membership drive during the 2022-25 session.This mass mobilisation marks a monumental shift in Bihar’s contemporary political landscape. Observers point out that the drive successfully expanded the JD(U)’s traditional footprint, deeply embedding its grassroots influence right down to the booth level.Commending the relentless efforts of party workers, Kushwaha said the overwhelming response reflects a profound, deep-seated public trust in the development model pioneered by Nitish Kumar.“This is a truly historic moment for the JD(U) family. Crossing the one-crore primary membership milestone is a direct validation of our leader Nitish Kumar’s vision of ‘development with social justice’. Our ground-level workers laboured tirelessly at every single booth to turn this monumental target into a reality,” JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad said while hailing the party’s achievement.The successful culmination of this membership drive is seen as a major structural reinforcement for the JD(U). By bringing over a crore verified citizens into its institutional fold, the party effectively consolidated its traditional voter base of women, Kurmi-Kushwaha bloc, extremely backward classes (EBCs) and other marginalised communities.Kushwaha emphasised that this massive organisational surge would fundamentally change how the party engages with the public moving forward. “We have not just met a numerical target; we have successfully built a living, breathing connection with over one crore citizens,” Kushwaha added.
