NAVI MUMBAI: Uran police have nabbed eight people for stealing cargo from container vehicles coming from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The police arrested six persons last Saturday and two more were nabbed on Tuesday, that led to the detection of three container goods thefts. Stolen material worth over Rs 5 lakh has reportedly been recovered.
The police are estimating that the gang stole goods worth Rs 8 lakh.

“We received a tip-off that certain container drivers would stop the vehicles at an isolated spot, where some men would unscrew the container doors. However, only some of the materials were stolen and the doors fixed again, so that no one would suspect if there was less material at the time of delivery,” said a cop from Uran police station.
Under the guidance of senior inspector, R Galande, a police team started keeping a watch on activities of certain containers leaving the Dronagiri node.
The six accused, Anna M Thevar (48), Shivkumar Singh alias Bunty (48), Ramchandra Wadkar (51), Yogesh Singh (34), Diwakar Singh (26) and Murtaza Khan (27), were caught red-handed while taking the goods out of the container on Saturday. Two more accused were arrested earlier this week.
Police officials said that the gang would be tipped off about the cargo by the accused container drivers. The rest of the members would open the door screws to steal the goods.
The accused used to only take around 5% to 10% of the goods, so that the companies did not make a fuss over the loss, as it is compensated by insurance.
All the accused have been sent to police custody for seven days.
They have been charged with theft and criminal breach of trust. Further investigation is on to nab other accused persons.
