Mumbai: A 44-year-old man was arrested by Kandivli police in connection with the molestation of a teenage girl inside an elevator at Dahanukarwadi Metro station on May 29.
Doni Sarkar, the accused, had fled the city after the incident. He was nabbed by a police team from Gitanjali Express when the train halted at Raipur Junction. Officials said he was headed to his hometown in West Bengal. Police said Sarkar worked as a mason in Mumbai and lived in a shanty.
On May 29, around 11.50am, the 17-year-old girl entered the lift; the accused was already present inside. As the doors shut, he molested her. Terrified after the incident, the girl first approached the Metro staff for help and then informed the police. A case was registered by Kandivli police.
Police said Metro officials provided them footage from 64 cameras, located inside and outside the premises.
A police team, comprising officer Hemant Gite and supervised by DCP Sandip Ghuge and senior inspector Karan Sonkavde, carried out technical surveillance which showed Sarkar had left the city and was on board Gitanjali Express. The team got in touch with railway security agencies and got Sarkar deboarded at Raipur Junction. He was brought to Mumbai where he was booked on molestation charges.
