Killer auto driver poses as 55-yr-old’s rescuer, held
Mumbai: Taken to be a good Samaritan who rushed an injured man to a hospital in July, an auto driver has now been arrested for causing his death by crashing into him in Govandi. Trombay police said the driver claimed that he chanced upon the man as he fainted and collapsed on the road, but the accounts of witnesses and the auto's owner helped nail his lie. They said on July 20, an auto driven by Sonu alias Shakir Shaikh (24) hit Gufran Sheikh (55) near Ahilyabai Holkar Marg. Gufran sustained serious head and leg injuries. He was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital, where he died five days later. The postmortem determined the head injury as the cause of death. During investigation, eyewitnesses, including two shopkeepers, said Sonu drove the auto recklessly and struck Gufran. The auto's owner, Adil Sheikh, confirmed having rented the vehicle to Sonu. Police have invoked Section 106(1) of BNS (causing death by rash or negligent act). tnn
