Madurai: K Annamalai on Sunday said the Madurai AIIMS will be opened for public use by Oct, while campaigning in the city for AIADMK candidates.
Addressing a gathering at Arappalayam in support of Madurai Central candidate Sundar C, Annamalai accused minister P T R Palanivel Thiagarajan of targeting him during the campaign despite earlier stating he would avoid personal attacks.
"PTR claimed he has nothing to do with the corporation, but questions remain over accountability," Annamalai said, alleging irregularities in the Madurai Corporation and claiming corruption to the tune of ₹200 crore. He also criticised the delay in appointing a mayor after the resignation of the previous incumbent.
He further alleged that individuals previously associated with PTR were involved in financial misconduct. "He speaks about governance but has surrounded himself with such people," Annamalai said.
On infrastructure, Annamalai accused the state government led by M K Stalin of misleading the public on the Madurai Metro project, claiming that no formal proposal had been submitted to the centre. He said the project will be revived if Edappadi K Palaniswami returns as chief minister.
He also criticised PTR's tenure as finance minister, alleging mismanagement of finances.
Reiterating his key promise, Annamalai said the Madurai AIIMS project would be completed and inaugurated by Oct, with Narendra Modi expected to attend the event.
Later, campaigning in Thirupparankundram for AIADMK candidate V V Rajan Chellappa, Annamalai accused the DMK government of failing to implement a court order related to the lighting of the temple deepam atop the hill.
He stressed the need for better coordination between the state and the centre, citing leaders such as N Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar as examples of cooperation yielding development projects.
Urging voters to support the AIADMK alliance, he called for a decisive mandate to "remove an anti-people government" and ensure victory for Rajan Chellappa in the upcoming assembly elections to remove the govt that hindered the Thirupparankundram deepam lighting.
