Tuticorin: A 17-year-old Class 12 student who went missing on Tuesday evening was found murdered near her house in a village in Tuticorin district on Wednesday.
The case, initially registered as a ‘girl missing' complaint, has been altered to murder. District superintendent of police C Madhan visited the spot and supervised the inquiry.
Police said the girl had stepped out around 6pm on Tuesday and did not return. Her parents filed a missing complaint with Kulathur police later in the night, following which a search was launched.
On Wednesday afternoon, villagers alerted police after spotting a body in a bush about 300 metres from the girl's house. Police rushed to the spot and confirmed that it was the missing teenager.
The body was sent to Tuticorin Government Hospital for postmortem.
"Preliminary inquiry indicates she had a strangulation injury on her neck," a senior police official said. "Whether there was any sexual assault will be known only after the autopsy report."
Forensic experts examined the scene and a sniffer dog was pressed into service as part of the investigation. Police said the girl's clothes were found intact.
Further investigation is on.
Meanwhile, villagers staged a brief road blockade on the East Coast Road demanding swift action. The protest was withdrawn after police assured them that the accused would be traced at the earliest.
