Lynch cry in student's death

Kolkata: An 18-year-old boy who had just passed his HS examination with distinction died under mysterious circumstances at Thakurpukur on Tuesday night. His family alleges he was beaten to death after being accused of stealing mangoes from an orchard.
The victim, Aniruddha Biswas, was an alumnus of the Arya Vidyapeeth in Behala.
Police agree that he was beaten up, but deny he was "lynched".

They claimed Aniruddha was attacked by two men after an altercation and died two days later. "We have arrested Chinmoy Sardar and Binod Valmiki in this connection. The exact cause of death can be ascertained after we receive the autopsy report," said Meeraj Khalid, DC (Southwest).
According to the boy's father Biswajit, Aniruddha was not keeping well after the HS exams. On Friday, his friend Supratim Biswas came to check on him. The duo walked towards a mango orchard called Purbapara Haribagan, where they stood and chatted. Suddenly, five men rushed towards them and accused them of stealing mango and damaging their property.
"They began beating the two boys," said Biswajit, who runs a paint shop. Aniruddha lost consciousness and Supratim called up his parents. They took him to MR Bangur hospital. A day later, he was shifted to Kasturi Nursing Home in Thakurpukur and then to CMRI Hospital, where he died on Tuesday. The boy's father runs a paints shop while his mother Jharna Biswas runs a garment store.

The family alleges that Haridevpur police initially paid no attention to their complaint. It was only after they approached Trinamool councillor Rajiv Das, who informed local MLA and mayor Sovan Chatterjee, that the cops arrested two suspects.
"I have been appraised of two possible reasons why the incident took place. One was that they were throwing stones to get mangoes and one of the pebbles broke the house-owner's window. , trying to pluck mangoes and one stone they used landed on the property owner's residence and damaged one of their windows. The other is that they got involved in an argument with some drug addicts who were passing lewd comments at girls. Whatever the case, we want police to take action and arrest all the accused," said Das.
Police say Aniruddha had come with his father to file the complaint. "From here, he went to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was discharged. It would be hasty to conclude that he was a victim of lynching. We will look into every angle," Khalid said.
