Kolhapur: Padma Rekha Jirge, a specialist in reproductive medicine and infertility from Kolhapur, earned major international recognition with two prestigious honours in the scientific field.
She was appointed editor-in-chief of ‘Fertility and Reproduction', the official journal of the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction and a leading Global South publication in reproductive medicine. The journal has a wide international readership and features research from across the Asia-Pacific region, including the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and China. Dr Jirge will take charge of the role from Jan 1.
She previously served as editor-in-chief of the ‘Journal of Human Reproductive Sciences' and later as deputy editor of ‘Fertility and Reproduction'.
Separately, she was offered full membership of Sigma Xi, the international scientific research honour society founded at Cornell University in 1886, recognising her research on ovarian reserve, IVF outcomes, and female genital tuberculosis-related infertility. Sigma Xi has included over 200 Nobel laureates among its members, such as Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Francis Crick, and Jennifer Doudna.
