Kolhapur: Even though Mahayuti has a majority in Kolhapur, its newly elected corporators will be sent on a trip on Thursday as a precaution.
These corporators will arrive in Kolhapur for the mayoral elections to be held on Feb 6 at 11 am. There are a total of 46 corporators in Mahayuti -- BJP 26, Shiv Sena 15, NCP 4, and Jansurajya Shakti Party 1. In the Mahavikas Aghadi, there are a total of 35 corporators -- 34 from Congress and 1 from Shiv Sena (UBT).
From the Mahayuti, BJP's Ruparani Nikam filed an application for the post of mayor, against whom Sachin Shende filed an application from Congress. Meanwhile, for the post of deputy mayor, the contest is between Durvas Kadam of Congress and Akshay Jarag of Jan Surajya Shakti Party. The elections for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor will be held in the KMC under the chairmanship of district collector Amol Yedge.
Administrative preparations at the KMC hall are going at a war footing for the mayoral elections. On Wednesday, KMC administrator K Manjulekshmi inspected the preparations for the mayoral elections. She personally reviewed the ongoing renovation work in the assembly hall, the entry arrangements for the newly elected corporators, the parking arrangements, and other related facilities, and gave necessary instructions to the concerned officials.
Deputy collector Sampat Khilari was present on behalf of the presiding officer during the inspection.
KMC administrator K Manjulekshmi said, "In view of the election process, the road from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue in front of the municipal corporation to Bazargate will be closed to traffic from both sides. To ensure that the election process is conducted peacefully and smoothly, the election-related work will be carried out within the framework of the model code of conduct as per the instructions of the district collector. Newly elected members will be allowed entry into the assembly hall till 11am."
