600 kg of cannabis worth Rs 10 crore seized from truck
Times News Network
Kanpur: Police scored a significant breakthrough against drug traffickers when a combined unit from the Crime Branch and Rawatpur police intercepted a truck on GT Road and seized a shipment of more than 600 kg of cannabis. The international market value of the recovered narcotics is estimated to be about 10 crore rupees.
ADCP Sumit Ramtek said that an informer had tipped off the police about a truck carrying drugs that would be passing through Kanpur. After receiving the input, he led the operation himself along with two teams. Police started pursuing the suspect vehicle as soon as it was sighted, and after a chase of roughly 15 kilometres, the truck was halted.
On searching the vehicle, the officers discovered a substantial quantity of narcotics concealed within the truck for transport. Smuggler Liyaqat Ali, a resident of Haryana, was arrested at the scene. During questioning, he disclosed the names of his associates--Jamshed, Javed, and Junaid--who are said to be involved in the illegal business.
Initial enquiries indicate that the narcotics consignment had been brought from Odisha. The group allegedly intended to distribute it to several metropolitan cities in the country, including Delhi and Mumbai, using the Agra route. Police are currently examining the wider network by analysing the arrested persons’ mobile data and call records.
