Dharwad: Ahead of Bakrid celebrations on May 28, district administration has formed taluk-level teams with police, revenue, transport, municipal corporation and animal husbandry departments to curb illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle., said the district animal welfare society president and DC Snehal R said.
Chairing a meeting of officials from various departments, she said the teams have been constituted to strictly enforce provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. She reiterated that slaughter of cows, calves and buffaloes below 13 years of age is prohibited under the law.
Deputy commissioner directed the HDMC and other urban local bodies to intensify monitoring to prevent illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle within their jurisdictions. She also instructed officials to ensure that sheep, goats and other permissible animals are slaughtered only at authorised slaughterhouses and that waste generated at slaughterhouses is disposed of properly.
