Karimganj election results 2024 live updates: BJP's Kripanath Mallah wins

NEW DELHI: In the Karimganj constituency of Assam, Kripanath Mallah of the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious with 545,093 votes, securing a margin of 18,360 votes over his closest rival, Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury of the Indian National Congress, who obtained 526,733 votes. Sahabul Islam Choudhury of the All India United Democratic Front finished a distant third with 29,205 votes.

The remaining candidates, including several independents, failed to make a significant impact, with vote tallies ranging from 7,109 to a mere 545. Jibesh Deb, an independent candidate, secured 7,109 votes, while Debojyoti Nath, another independent, received 5,907 votes. Ahad Uddin of the Rashtriya Ulama Council garnered 4,192 votes.

Among the other independent candidates, Binay Krishna Roy received 3,628 votes, Dilip Kumar secured 2,630 votes, and Rosid Ahmed Laskar obtained 2,601 votes. Muzakkir Hasan Laskar, another independent, received 2,291 votes, followed by Abdul Basit Tapadar with 1,923 votes and Gopal Chandra Paul with 1,657 votes. The "None of the Above" (NOTA) option received 2,940 votes.

Karimganj is one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam. Karimganj participated in Phase 2 of the 2024 Lok Sabha election on April 26, 2024, with a voter turnout of 80.48 per cent. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4, 2024.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on March 16.

The Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency encompasses 8 Assembly segments: Ratabari, Patharkandi, Karimganj North, Karimganj South, Badarpur, Hailakandi, Katlichera, and Algapur. The constituency came into existence in the year 1952.

In the 2024 elections, the prominent candidates contesting in the Karimganj Lok Sabha Constituency are Amar Sing Tisso from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Joyram Engleng from the Indian National Congress (INC).

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kripanath Mallah of the BJP emerged victorious, defeating Radheshyam Biswas of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) by a margin of 38,389 votes.

In the 2014 elections, Radheshyam Biswas of AIUDF won the seat, beating Krishna Das of the BJP by a significant margin of 1,02,094 votes.

The 2024 elections will be crucial in determining whether the BJP can retain its hold or if the INC and AIUDF can make significant inroads in this pivotal constituency.
